Hackettstown boys basketball has fun in the sun - nj.com

Last weekend brought snow, ice and cold temperatures to New Jersey. For Hackettstown’s boys basketball team, it brought sun, sand and volleyball.

That’s right, while New Jerseyans back home were shoveling their driveways and cleaning ice off of their cars, Hackettstown was living it up in 80-degree weather on their annual trip to Florida.

While the trip was highlighted by top golf, paintball, barbeques and plenty of time lounging by the beach and pool, Hackettstown did play some hoops. Jalen Baptists and Ryan Omelia both scored 19 points to lead it past Canterbury (Fla.), 88-57, and Tyler Kirkpatrick scored 19 points in a 81-39 win over Keswick Christian (Fla.).

“This trip rejuvenates us,” Hackettstown coach Mike McDonagh said. “The kids all like each other a lot, which is great. We had such a blast. We did so many fun things. The kids all hung out together and went in the pool. Everything they did was together. This is a group that likes to be around each other. I just hope it strengthens us for the second half of the season.”

The vacation came at the perfect time for Hackettstown (10-2). It had faced two ranked foes in No. 12 Watchung Hills and No. 17 West Morris consecutive weekends and needed a break. Things, however, won’t get any easier Friday when the Tigers host Jefferson (8-3).

“After our first 12 games, I couldn’t be prouder of this group,” McDonagh said. “Basketball is a long season so this week we could rest a little bit, have some fun and still play some basketball. It reenergizes us and gets us ready for everything that is to come.”

The trip to Florida has been going on for six years. It started when McDonagh emailed 50 athletic directors from the Sunshine State. After connecting with Shore Crest Prep, McDonagh was put into contact with Keswick Christian athletic director Karrmayne King and she’s been hooking Hackettstown up every since.

If you’re feeling jealous of McDonagh, don’t worry, he still had to shovel his driveway when he got home last Sunday night.
