Who had more fun at NHL All-Star Weekend than Tomas Hertl? No one - Santa Cruz Sentinel

San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl made the most of his first experience at the NHL All-Star Game.

A day after he came up with the most viral moment in the skills portion of all-star weekend, Hertl scored five goals in two games, including the winning goal in the final as the Pacific Division team beat the Atlantic Division 5-4 to win the event’s 3-on-3 tournament Saturday at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

At the 7:24 mark of the second half against the Atlantic team, Hertl took a pass from Leon Draisaitl, skated in on goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy and scored short side to break the 4-4 tie.

The victory was the third in five years for the Pacific Division team, which split a $1 million prize for winning the tournament that was a little more intense than usual.

“You’ve been on the ice for 20 minutes,” Hertl said, “you play hard so you want to shut it down and win the game.”

Hertl scored four goals for the Pacific team in its 10-5 semifinal win over the Central Division, as he became the first Sharks player to score four goals in an NHL All-Star Game. Owen Nolan had three goals in 1997 when the game was held in San Jose.

Hertl scored his first goal in the first half, beating St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington on a breakaway at the 4:42 mark to give the Pacific Division team a 3-0 lead. In the second half with the Pacific team leading 7-5, Hertl scored three consecutive goals in a span of 4 minutes and 11 seconds for the final margin of victory.

“I don’t know what happened, because normally I don’t score that many goals,” Hertl told NHL Network after the event. “I had an awesome time. It was such a great experience playing with all of these guys. I’m happy I can help the team with some goals.”

Despite Hertl’s five goals, David Pastrnak of the Boston Bruins was named the All-Star Game’s Most Valuable player. Pastrnak had four goals and two assists in the two games. Fans voted on the winner of the award, and Hertl was not among the four available choices.

Hertl spent most of Saturday’s games on a line with Max Pacioretty of the Vegas Golden Knights and Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings. Although the Sharks’ rivalry with the Golden Knights only dates back two-plus seasons, Kopitar and Hertl have faced each other dozens of times, including playoffs, since Hertl came into the league in 2014.

“Before, seven years we hate each other,” Hertl said of Kopitar, “but now we hang out, so it’s all good.”

Friday night, Hertl had some fun during the goalie save streak competition, as he donned a Justin Bieber mask prior to facing Binnington.

Hertl was playing on a bet Binnington had made with Bieber earlier this month. Binnington challenged Bieber on social media, saying if the pop singer could score on him once in 10 shootout attempts, he would dye his hair platinum blonde. Bieber accepted the challenge, suggesting instead that the loser donates money to the winner’s favorite charity.

With the mask on, Hertl tried to go forehand to backhand — resulting in an easy stop for Binnington, who later won the event with a save streak of 10.

“It was an amazing time,” Hertl said. “Yesterday, I did Bieber, everybody loves it. Today I score some goals. My first experience was an amazing two days, amazing hanging out with all these guys. Hopefully I can do it again.”

Going into the event, Hertl, who was chosen to represent the Sharks after original selection Logan Couture was injured Jan. 7, was a bit unsure as to how competitive he needed to be.

“I will be looking for other guys, what they do,” Hertl said earlier this month. “I don’t want to be the guy trying too much or doing nothing.”

At last year’s all-star game at SAP Center in San Jose, the Pacific Division team featured Sharks defensemen Brent Burns and Erik Karlsson and forward Joe Pavelski. Karlsson scored twice, but the Pacific Division team’s stay in the 3-on-3 tournament was a short one.

The Central Division team scored seven times on their first nine shots against Anaheim Ducks netminder John Gibson, and went on to a 10-4 win.

The Central Division went on to lose 10-5 to the Metropolitan Division in the final, as Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby earned MVP honors with a combined eight points in the two games.

In the first four years of the 3-on-3 tournament format for the NHL All-Star Game, the Pacific Division team had won twice — in 2016 and 2018 — and the Metropolitan Division had also won twice, with their first victory coming in 2017.

Hertl and the Sharks (21-25-4) will be back to business on Monday when they host the Anaheim Ducks. So far this season, Hertl has 35 points in 46 games.
