Vacaville Recreation Expo fun for adults, kids - Vacaville Reporter

Under the bigtop that was Ulatis Community Center Saturday, popcorn flew, music and theater flowed and activities galore were explored during the Vacaville Recreation Expo.

For four hours, kids and adults alike streamed into the building and got a close look at fun summertime offerings.

Love rhythm? There’s a dance camp for that.

Dramatic performances more your thing? Perhaps Starbound Theatre has something to fuel your acting bug.

Heart STEM more than anything? Mad Science may pique your interest.

Seriously, there’s something for every palate.

Over at the Kids in Motion table, volunteer Jasmine Moore said visitation has been hearty. Lots of questions, lots of sign-ups. The Adult West African Fitness Dance Class drew ample queries, as well.

Anyone who wants to experience something new can through the city, she said, with the abundance of offerings to be had.

“I think it’s kind of awesome,” she said. “There’s so many opportunities for kids to get involved.”

The 16-year-old said her sister takes a princess dance class and loves it.

Sheila Thomas said her granddaughter, Kayden Townsend, 12, is big into performances, too. She’s performed for Starbound Theatre for a few years, Thomas said, and the family has come to the Expo to see her in stage.

Aside from that, Thomas said she also gets a lot out of the event.

“I get to find out a lot of things that are going on,” she said, pointing to all the tables full of activity offerings.

Ninja Allen, who accompanied her mother and daughter, added that the event is for all ages.

“I always enjoy the performances, which show how great the Vacaville programs are,” she said.

Which is likely why summer may see her participating in local activities, too.

“My mom and I were looking at Ms. Renee’s fitness for adults,” she added.

Jean Elias said her daughter, Ayanna, 10, has taken voice lessons through the city for years and recently sang the national anthem as part of a quartet for the Fourth of July.

“It was an amazing experience for her confidence and her growth,” she pointed out. “Anna (Combs Johnson) really encourages them to express themselves. She keeps everything safe and fun.”

Next up may be a French for kids class or something regarding culinary arts. Or perhaps more music-related classes, as the youth had recently learned to play the ukulele.

“There’s a lot to offer for kids,” Jean Elias said.
