Technically, the first day of spring is still weeks away. But Dallasites know that the season truly begins here with the opening of Dallas Blooms. The annual floral festival blossoms this weekend with more 500,000 bulbs planted to bloom throughout the season and fill the gardens with color along with other springtime plants. From Feb. 29 through April 12, tulips, daffodils, Dutch irises, hyacinths, azaleas, pansies, violas and cherry trees will flower when it’s their perfect time. For this year’s “Sounds of Spring” theme, there will be six giant music-inspired topiaries, including a musician playing a piano, another on violin and individual instruments including guitars, a harp and a saxophone. Plus, there will be live music every weekend with a different genre featured each week. Performers will include Havana NRG, Astraios Chamber Music, Yardgoat, Emerald City’s Elevation ensemble and the Coppertones. Opening weekend will feature country bands as part of the Blooms, Boots and BBQ Fest.

Feb. 29-April 12, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Dallas Arboretum, 8525 Garland Road, Dallas. $17 for adults, $14 for seniors 65 and older, $12 for children 2-12, free for children under 2. Frisco’s Major League Soccer team will begin its 25th season at home Feb. 29 against the Philadelphia Union. As the team continues the quest for its first MLS Cup, fans can enjoy some new amenities, including menu items such as Hot Cheetos Chili Pie, elote hot dogs and cherry limeade margaritas; up to four hours of free Wi-Fi; access to the Chase Clubhouse with TVs, shade and phone charging stations; and $2 Aquafina bottled water for Chase cardholders. Go early for the 24-Hour Tailgate, which starts Feb. 28 at 5 p.m., and stay late for $5 beers and cocktails in the Hall of Fame Club and the Winners Club.

This discounted admission promotion started as a hot deal during cool weather, but Texas and Mother Nature had other plans. It’s the final weekend to visit PY1, the 81-foot-tall pyramid-shaped entertainment venue that’s been in Lot F of Globe Life Park since December. See two shows composed of lights, lasers and special effects: Stella: The Time Machine Journey, a 40-minute participatory show by artist Annie Brocoli that’s recommended for ages 5 and older, and Through the Echoes, a 50-minute multimedia show by interdisciplinary artist Gabriel Coutu Dumont that’s suitable for ages 12 and up. There will also be two more PY1 Nights, the nightlife experience for ages 21 and older. Artistic director Sarah Bromley’s PY1 Nights combines the pyramid’s visual effects capabilities with DJs spinning music to create themed nights.

Watch amateur cowboys and cowgirls compete in events such as team roping, barrel racing and bull riding in hopes of qualifying for the finals March 7-8 at AT&T Stadium. At the finals, these everyday rodeo athletes will join professionals in competing for a $2.35 million purse — one of the biggest payouts in rodeo. Spectators attending the semifinals at Cowtown Coliseum can also check out a free Fan Zone, which features vendors.

At this first-time Allen event, sample suds and spirits from Allen’s Nine Band Brewing and other local breweries, Bishop Cider Co., Devils River Whiskey, Glenfiddich, Balvenie, Tullamore Dew and dozens of others. Jeff “Skin” Wade, radio host and co-owner of Rollertown Beerworks in Celina, will emcee the fest, which will also include live music and food stations serving items such as brisket sliders and fried cheese curds. Admission includes a souvenir tasting glass, and proceeds benefit the local chapter of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

While Epic Waters, Grand Prairie’s 80,000-square-foot water park, stays open year-round with the indoor section’s temperature kept at 85 degrees, Epic Waves (its 10,000-square-foot outdoor pool) has been closed since Labor Day. It will reopen for a few hours on Feb. 29 for those who want to brave water in the 40- to 50-degree range during a Texas-style polar plunge. Participants will receive a souvenir T-shirt, hot chocolate and admission to Epic Waters’ balmy indoor park, where they can warm up and play all day.

For this fun and funky fundraiser, clothing designers will partner with restaurants and other food businesses to create outfits that are made from at least 10 percent restaurant supplies, both edible and not, and that can stay together for a walk down the runway. Garments from past events have included a bridal gown made from coffee filters, a dress fashioned from Jack in the Box wrappers and spoons, and a form-fitting blouse made from cabbage leaves. Tasty! The party will also include host D’Andra Simmons from The Real Housewives of Dallas and her husband, Jeremy Lock; the Ben E. Keith Culinary Competition featuring sweet and savory appetizers made by a dozen student culinary teams from North Texas; and live and silent auctions.

Get a taste of nearly two dozen North Texas film festivals at this smorgasbord event. The fests, including the Dallas International Film Festival, Festival de Cine Latino Americano, Q Cinema, 3 Stars Jewish Cinema and Women Texas Film Festival, will present 11 feature films and 26 shorts over several days in Dallas. The lineup ranges from a documentary about Southern Gothic author Flannery O’Connor to Red Dog, songwriter Luke Dick’s story about growing up in an Oklahoma strip club.

See the classic fairy tale told in a modern, unconventional way. Lightwire Theater, a semifinalist on America’s Got Talent and winner of Fake Off, combines adult dancers in costumes and puppets — all covered in electroluminescent wire — to tell stories through movement and music. See the baby swan attempt to fit in among bright ducklings and a glowing cat before finding its true home.

FREE Chef-owner Andrea Meyer will celebrate the fifth birthday of her French pastry shop with free birthday cake macarons and drip coffee, on Feb. 29 starting at 7 a.m. But the party really starts at 7 p.m.,when she’ll break out the Champagne.
