Editor’s note: The Orange County Register is having the area’s spring sports coaches take part in a Q&A about the 2020 season that was cut short by the coronavirus crisis.

Jeff Nadeau, La Quinta softball

Q: How are you adapting to being home every day during the spring?

A: Not well at all. I have coached high school baseball or softball since I was 21. I have four children who have played baseball and softball since they were 4. I have coached my daughters Taryn, who graduated in 2018 and is one of my assistant coaches this year, and Ryann, who is a junior this year at La Quinta, so I have absolutely gone into withdrawals this year without softball.

Q: As a coach, what do you miss most about your “normal routine” (pre-coronavirus)?

A: The thing I miss the most is game day, the competition, the rush and the fun and excitement of high school softball games.

Q: When you think about your team these days, what stands out the most?

A: The bonding of our girls and the very close friendships that many of our girls have with each other.

Q: As a coach, what has been the worst moment for you this spring and why?

A: By far the worst thing this spring has been the realization that our seniors have played their last high school games, without a league season, the playoffs, senior day. Everything just ended unnaturally.

Q: And what has been the best moment for you this spring and why?

A: My best moments have been being ranked No. 4 in CIF Division 5 for two weeks after moving up from Division 7 this year; the amazing success of Karen Dam, our starting third baseman who literally never played organized softball before high school this year; coaching my daughter Ryann, and all of our girls playing so well through many injuries and adversity in the first month of the season.

Q: If you could play one game tomorrow, what would that look like? (Opponent? Venue? The circumstances?)

A: For obvious reasons, anyone, anywhere, any time, just to be able to play another game. But as long as we are dreaming, the CIF championship game at Deanna Manning Stadium under the lights since we came so close last year, making it to the CIF semifinals. We came so close.

Q: What do you want your players to learn from all of this?

A: That we have to enjoy every moment of our high school athletic careers, because we never know when we will be playing our last game.

Q: For fun, which player(s) on your team made you laugh the most?

A: Sofia Kroll. She is a four-year varsity starter at shortstop, incredibly smart, talented, an amazing musician and one of the hardest-working kids in my coaching and teaching career, but she is also hilarious. She has played with or against my daughter Ryann since tee ball at GGASA or La Quinta and EVERYONE loves her. She is just so enthusiastic and funny that you can’t have a bad day around her.

Q: For fun, who on your team do you take deep and who do you strike out if you had a chance?

A: I would definitely take Ally Guzman deep because she is a Dodger fan and we all know it’s all about the ANGELS! I would strike out my daughter Ryann because then I would have bragging rights at home.

Q: For fun, what song do you play on the bus for the final bus ride home?

A: We don’t have a specific song on the bus ride home, but Nicole Takao is our DJ on the bus and she would be playing some great ’80s music!
