Fun Activities for Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Rhode Island Monthly

Along with the rest of the world, Rhode Islanders have been asked to stay at home if possible and limit contact with others in an effort to help stop the spread of the COVID-19. Adjusting to a life of social distancing can be a challenge for many reasons, simply because it might seem like there isn’t much to do while sitting at home. Here is a list of activities you can enjoy (at a safe distance) in the face of this pandemic.

1. The Avenue Concept

If you are feeling a little stir crazy, the Avenue Concept is here to get you out of the house. This public arts organization has created a downtown self-guided tour with educational questions for you or the kids and a South Side and West End self-guided tour. If you do decide to go out, make sure that you do not touch anything and that you stay at least six feet away from others. If you are feeling even a little bit ill, for the well being of our fellow Rhode Islanders, please stay home and stick to the other fun activities on this list!

2. Dani and Jackie’s Virtual Happy Hour

Are you missing the bar scene? These professional mixologists are bringing the bar to you, with live mixology classes and socializing opportunities over Zoom. There are many options for classes, with availability through April. zoom.us

3. Museums

Although museums are closed for in-person visits, many have begun to offer online or virtual tours. Locally, Gallery Night Providence is offering virtual tours online and on their Facebook Page. If you are feeling more of an international vibe, both the Louvre and the Vatican have uploaded virtual tours of their world-famous exhibits.

4. Book Clubs

Quarantine/social distancing presents a great opportunity to do some good ole’ recreational reading, but even with this abundance of time, it is often challenging to actually get yourself to pick up a book. Goodreads functions as a platform for a plethora of book clubs, from Oprah’s book club to Lord of the Rings book club. If you still need more motivation, try out the Rumpus Book Club. This $30 a month membership mails a book to you every month and online discussions about the book to help you work through what you are reading. Check out our website for a list of books written by local Rhode Island authors.

5. Cardigan Connection

Join the Cardigan Connection live on their Facebook page Tuesday night, March 24 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for the Cardigan Connection’s fourth birthday party. The live online video event will include well-known authors TaraShea Nesbit (Beheld), Brian Platzer (The Body Politic), Laura Zigman (Separation Anxiety) and Ann Napolitano (Dear Edward), who will each take the virtual stage for fifteen minutes to talk about their books. Books are available for purchase via the online Brown Bookstore.

Are you a music lover? Are you among the many disappointed concert-goers in a time of social distancing? If so, then Sofa King Fest is here to soothe your sorrows. This virtual concert series is taking place now and for the indefinite future. Check the website for the daily lineup and tune in to watch quarantined and sheltering-in-place artists around the world share their music. Donations to support the artists are optional but encouraged.

7. Broadway Shows

If you are craving the theater, the existing platform, BroadwayHD, brings prerecorded Broadway performances to your living room. For less than the price of a standard Netflix subscription, you can have endless Broadway performances at your fingertips, perfect for the long at-home weeks ahead.

8. The Metropolitan Opera

In this time of stress and isolation, the Met is bringing a bit of free joy to your computer screens with free daily performances from the past fourteen years of the Met’s Live in HD series. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. for a new performance every night. Videos are up for twenty-three hours (until 6:30 p.m. the following night) and then they will be rotated out for a new video.

9. The Paint Bar

Usually, this Newton, Massachusetts-based, family-owned paint bar has in-person paint parties, but now, they are offering online classes, private parties and corporate events via Zoom. Soon, they will be able to ship materials directly to your door so you can participate with no hassle. Make sure you check their online calendar and complete the required registration in advance. thepaintbar.com
