Giant snowball brings community together — for fun - Hot Springs Sentinel - Hot Springs Sentinel

Following two rounds of heavy snowfall across the state, Sarah Day and other residents of Hot Springs and the surrounding area banded together last week to build a snowball with a diameter of 8.28 feet — well short of a world record, but big on fun.

“We had an epic snowfall, and I figured we needed to have something epic as a result of it. A snowball came to mind because a snowman is difficult to do,” Day said. “If you get a really big base, you can’t get the head that would fit it on top because it becomes so heavy.”

According to Guinness World Records, the largest snowball measured 32.94 feet in circumference — or 10.49 feet in diameter.

An early measurement of the snowball shows a circumference of about 16 feet. The final measurement of the circumference was 26 feet, according to Sarah Day, who organized the build. - Submitted photo

Day said the final circumference of the snowball built by her and others in the community was 26 feet, which Day said dividing that measurement by pi (3.14) gave a final diameter of 8.28 feet.

“I’ve got a very flat piece of land,” she said. “We had the time, we had the snow, so it seemed like the right thing to do.”

She said it felt “great” to build the snowball, noting she put out a plea on Facebook, and had a friend who made it into an event on Facebook.

It was only Sarah Day and her daughter, Kaedn, at first, but the snowball got so big she and her daughter could not roll it.

People interested in the Facebook event and residents from the Fountain Lake area showed up at Day’s house to help.

“I had four cars of people come out. Neighbors that saw us doing it walked over and brought their stuff to help us, and it was nice just to see the community (come out),” Day said.

“It took us about four hours to get to that point,” she said. “I do have to admit, as far as feeling that night, I was worn out.”

She said, “I had no idea I was spending that much time doing it, but we had a good time. It was great.”

Day looked on YouTube to see the best way to build a big snowball and discovered the main thing was that it needs to have a good core.

“If your core is not really firm, then it’s going to fall apart the bigger it gets,” Day said.

When the snowball got to 5 and a half feet, it got to the point where Day and the others could not move it without some type of mechanical device to help roll it. The group rolled smaller snowballs and put them around the base, and then built it from there until they got to the 8-foot mark.

“I don’t know on the 10 foot one if that might have involved some kind of machinery helping to roll it,” she said, noting their snowball “was all man-made, no machinery involved at all. Just our strong backs and hands doing it.”

Day noted how a simple thing like building a snowball can impact people.

“I met people that I never knew. We all had the same feeling at the end that this was a good thing. It was a fun thing; 2020 wasn’t a great year, and 2021 has not been that great either so far. We got together for a few hours and had a great time,” Day said.

The adults who helped told her “I haven’t felt like a kid like that in such a long time,” she said. “Burdens of life are so big right now, and we put all that aside and had a wonderful time together.

“We didn’t do anything except build a snowball. You can take a little thing and have a good time with it. I want them all to see that. We don’t need to get bogged down in the yoke of what’s going on. We can actually take a moment and do a fun thing and do a good thing.”
