Republican state Rep. Jake Ellzey has entered the crowded field to replace the late Ron Wright in Congress.

The retired Navy fighter pilot from rural Ellis County was elected to the Texas Legislature in 2020 and won’t have to give up his seat to run in the May special election for Congressional District 6. Numerous Republicans and Democrats are vying in the open primary.

Wright, who died last month after contracted the coronavirus, beat Ellzey in the 2018 GOP primary for the District 6 post. Now Ellzey will run against Wright’s widow, Republican activist Susan Wright, for the seat.

After announcing her candidacy this week, Susan Wright got the backing of 100 activists and local leaders in the state.

Other Republican contenders are expected to jump into the race, including Katrina Pierson, an adviser to former President Donald Trump.

Democrats have also flooded into the contest, including 2018 congressional nominee Jana Lynn Sanchez, 2020 state House candidate Lydia Bean and education advocate Shawn Lassiter.

After a candidate doesn’t get above 50 percent of the vote in May, the top two finishers will meet in a runoff.

The district includes parts of Tarrant and Ellis and Navarro counties.
