'To The Island' feels like classic Crowded House in a way fans will recognise

There's something about this new Crowded House song that makes it sound a lot more like Crowded House than (the still excellent) previous single 'Whatever You Want'
Some may argue that Neil Finn's songwriting will always sound like Crowded House. But there are subtle differences between the way a Crowded House song sounds and feels to a Finn solo piece, a Pajama Club tune, or any of his recent musical experiments.
The cascading vocals in the song's intro have that off-the-wall feeling that early Crowded House records were littered with. But the weirdness levels out into straightforward pop perfection by the time the chorus hits.
There's also just a general 80s art-pop feel to the writing and performance: this would not have sounded out of place on any of the band's first three records.
The guitar solo doesn't necessarily sound very Crowdies, but Neil has been history's most underrated shredder forever so any chance to put his fretwork in the spotlight is welcome.
'To The Island' helps the penny drop: Crowded House really are back. That might not seem like a big deal to the casual fan – they announced their return a while back – but this song makes it all feel significantly more real.
Crowded House's new album Dreamers Are Waiting will be out Friday 4 June.
