SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio -- I remember the day in 2nd grade when I learned the jingle: “30 days hath September,April, June and November . . . and I did not much like the inexact rhyme. But it was a handy lyric, almost hypnotic. Maybe you even still recite it (internally) when planning an event or -- teachers out there? -- creating a syllabus. Though I have the eccentric habit of trying to keep the calendar in my head, which is already filled up with phone numbers, addresses and birthdays, I prefer to manage time unfettered. Well, some of the time.

February is scant in days, but do cherish each one.

A new graduate. Hiram College is pleased to announce a new alumnus. David Yost of Mayfield Heights graduated at the end of the Fall 2020 semeste earning a bachelor’s degree in business management from the College, Founded in 1850, Hiram College is small and personal and  continues today as a respected liberal arts institution. Located in Ohio’s Western Reserve, Hiram is committed to educational excellence.

And another graduate: More than 1,000 students were awarded undergraduate and advanced degrees and certificates at Youngstown State University’s fall commencement, including the following Hillcrest-area resident: Preslie Hirsch of Lyndhurst, who completed a Master of Science in Education in Counseling.

Scholars thriving. Two local students have been named to the dean’s list for the fall 2020 semester at Baldwin Wallace University, according to provost Stephen D. Stahl. Any full-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for 12 or more graded hours or part-time student who achieves a GPA of at least 3.6 for six or more graded hours in the fall or spring semesteris eligible.. Alexis Adams of Lyndhurst (44124), a graduate of Horizon Science Academy majoring in sociology achieved this honor as did; Jessica Wolenski, a graduate of Beaumont School and also a Lyndhurst resident.

Connecting for Kids. What can be more important than nurturing kids and noticing their individual pace of development?  The name of a resource new to me has surfaced in my email, but perhaps you are already in the loop. Just in case you’re not, let me offer a few aspects of the many activities they sponsor and services available. Connecting for Kids provides education and support to families with concerns about their child. Participating families:

  • Have a child younger than 13 years of age
  • Live in Cuyahoga or Lorain County
  • Have a concern about their child

Connecting for Kids serves all families, including children with and without a formal diagnosis. There is also a membership category for educators and professionals.

A free subscription entitles members to:

  • a personal phone call to welcome you, provide support and help you to connect with local resources
  • a monthly e-newsletter containing information, resources and local community programs/events pertinent to families with a child struggling
  • special Facebook Groups
  • Parent Match Program
  • Access to others who share similar concerns

While joining Connecting for Kids is free, programs funded by grants, fundraising and donations are welcome. Please click here. February is traditionally when the annual fundraiser will be held. Details were not on their website as of press time. However, a music program caught my eye. This hands-on program, led by a board-certified music therapist, is for children (ages 0-6 years) who are struggling in an area of development. Families who attend can learn how to use music to improve their child’s motor, communication and social skills and behavior. This program is led by a Board-Certified Music Therapist.

“Music therapy & more” welcomes children of all abilities. Some kids can’t sit for any/all of the 30 minutes, so they can explore the room! Some children have limited language - adults can model singing and language for them. Some children have limited motor skills - caregivers can physically assist their child. The music therapist will help guide participants. Siblings (ages 0-6 years) may also attend but must register separately. This program is free and open to the public, but registration is required. For further information, call 440-570-5908.
