Crowded field in incumbent-free Isabella County district - The Morning Sun

bulukarga.blogspot.com

There was one Isabella County commission district without an incumbent and one with two following the 2020 Census redistricting. Four people — two from each party — hope to represent the district that otherwise next January will be vacant.

Two Republicans and two Democrats filed to represent District 2 and the four will square off in an inner-party contest on Aug. 2 to see who’ll advance to the Nov. 8 general election, according to information from Isabella County Clerk Minde Lux.

Republicans Jeffrey P. Grey, of Lake Isabella, and Christopher L. Embrey, of Weidman, filed to run by Tuesday’s deadline. The winner of the Republican primary will face the winner of the Democratic primary pitting Kevin Smith, of Blanchard, and Karyn Walters, of Riverdale.

Until this year, District 2 was represented by Frank Engler, a Deerfield Township Republican, who was moved into District 4. Engler was originally paired with Jim Horton, the Republican who represented the Union Township-heavy district, and the two would have squared off in the Aug. 2 primary.

Horton, former commission chairman and its current vice chairman, announced two weeks ago that he will not seek re-election, freeing up Engler to move to the Nov. 8 election, where he’ll face Democrat Tamara Neff, of Mt. Pleasant.

The only other contested primary is in District 5, which is in Mt. Pleasant.

Jim Moreno, the longest-serving county commissioner, will face off against David Verway. The winner of the heavily-Democratic district won’t face a Republican challenger.

The only other contested November election involving county commissioners is in District 1, where incumbent Republican Terry Hutchinson, of Weidman, will face Nicole Hagle, of Mt. Pleasant.

The rest of the sitting county commissioners — Jerry Jaloszynski, a Chippewa Township Republican from District 3; and Mt. Pleasant Democrats Steve Swaney, District 6, and Tobin Hope, District 7 — are all uncontested in both the primary and the general election.

The road commission race — a best of two contest — will see Republicans Bill Hauck and Terry Turnwald face Melinda Hovey Salchert in November.
