OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio -- Foggyfalls Cemetery is preparing for Halloween.

The Bagley Road home -- with Its towering pumpkin heads, huge skeletons and creepy tombstone crawlers -- is also getting ready for a new local Halloween decorating contest.

“We know about it,” said Nick Smith and Kristin Ilcisko, homeowners of the spooky property. “We’re registered already.”

The Olmsted Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the Fright Fight contest. The competition is open to residents and businesses that plan to decorate in a spooktacular way this Halloween season. Participants compete for a cash prize, trophy and bragging rights, according to the commerce’s flyer. First place is $200; second, $100; and third, $50.

The deadline to enter is Oct. 5. And it’s free. All locations must be decorated by Oct. 9.

Here’s the fun part: The public votes for the winners via an online poll. How? On Oct. 9, a driving map of all the houses and businesses in the competition will be posted at olmstedchamber.org. Drive around and take a look at these Halloween-themed structures and grounds.

The deadline to vote is 11:59 p.m. Oct. 31. The winners will be contacted Nov. 1 and photos will be posted on the chamber’s website and its Facebook page.

This is the second year for Foggyfalls. Nick said they began decorating last year due to COVID-19 and their inability to travel for vacation.

“We began decorating the front yard and we loved it,” he said. “We’ve expanded it this year and we may have a surprise for those who visit.”

It’s not unusual to see motorists pull off the road at the house that is just west of Fitch Road on Bagley’s north side and take pictures. Nick and Kristin welcome the visitors and answer their curious questions. An often asked one is “How do you learn to make huge pillars, the fog that covers the ground or moving spooky figures?”

The answer, well, is simple -- YouTube!

“We also joined the Cleveland Haunt Club. It offers meetings and tours,” Nick said.

One of the recent tours was to the Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield and its haunted prison.

“It was awesome,” Kristin said.

Foggyfalls has its own Instagram and Facebook pages at foggyfalls_cemetery.

C’mon, folks. Get into the haunting mood and decorate your house or business. We’ve had some creative haunts last year. Let’s have a skele-ton of fun this year. Good luck!

Free pancake breakfast: It’s Homecoming weekend.

An Olmsted Falls Kiwanis Club tradition, which skipped last year due to COVID, returns Sunday (Sept. 26). It’s the free Homecoming Pancake Breakfast that runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Olmsted Falls High School.

The event features the club’s famous all-you-can-eat pancakes, French toast, sausage, juice and coffee. As usual, donations will be accepted.

The club’s members and helpers will wear masks, and the public is encouraged to do so, also. Why not take your family out for breakfast and enjoy this community event with friends and family.

Meet the chiefs: The community is invited to have Coffee with the Chiefs from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday (Sept. 24). The informal gathering is at the Olmsted Township Fire Department’s training room on Fitch Road, where the fire and police chiefs will be available.

It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and learn more about our safety forces.

Marketplace: This Sunday (Sept. 26) is the final Marketplace of the Falls in downtown Olmsted Falls. It runs from noon to 5 p.m.

You’ll see plenty of vendors offering that special item or two for yourself, your home or someone on your gift list. Be sure to head down and check out all the fun, food and music at this final event of its kind this year.

Kampus kudos: Jim Wonders and Andrea Petrey of Olmsted Falls were named to the summer President’s List at Southern New Hampshire University. Full-time students who earn this honor must have a minimum GPA of 3.7 and above.

Janeen Medwetz of Olmsted Falls earned the Dean’s List for the summer at Southern New Hampshire University. These students must have achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 to 3.699 to earn this honor.

Michael Dulin of Olmsted Falls was named to the spring Dean’s List at The Citadel. Cadets and students who are registered for 12 or more semester hours and whose GPA is 3.2 or higher, with no grade of incomplete and none below C for work in a semester, are eligible for this honor.

Congrats to these fine students.

Clambake: The annual Olmsted Township firefighters’ clambake is Oct. 9 at the West Side Irish-American Club.

The bake includes a dozen clams, half a chicken, sweet potato, corn on the cob, clam chowder and refreshments. The cost is $30 per bake. Additional clams are available.

There will be music, a DJ, games, a 50/50 raffle, side boards and more. A cash bar will be available.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to midnight at the club located at 8559 Jennings Road in Olmsted Township. You may obtain tickets by stopping by the Fitch Road fire house or going to the firefighters’ Facebook page and scanning the QR code in a flyer on that site.

Concert: Grace Church will host a concert where some very familiar names will be performing.

Ernesto Alcantara will present his Blown Away Concert with Sanctuary, Indy Aleese and the Grace CMA Worship. The concert is billed as a “powerful and uplifting” evening of inspirational live Christian music.

Ernesto portrayed Jesus Christ in “Compassion the Musical” that played locally and in several Northeast churches in 2019. He has also performed with outstanding recording artists and appeared in movies. His latest single is “Blown Away.”

Opening for Ernesto is Sanctuary Music, composed of three of the singing Gonzalez family who were raised here and attended Olmsted Falls schools. They are St. Mary of the Falls parishioners. They will perform their first CD, “Never Look Down,” among others.

The concert is at 7 p.m. Oct. 3 at Grace Church, 6941 Columbia Road. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $18 each online, $22 at the door and $15 for students, which must be bought at the door.

Go to ernestoalcaantara.com and click on the $18 icon near the bottom of the page.

Mark your calendar: Falls Day in the Park is from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 3 at the East River Park on Lewis Road.

There will be some exciting additions, such as an expanded CLE Market with plenty of vendors to do some, yes, holiday shopping. There will be lots of kids activities, a performance by the Olmsted Falls High School marching band, food, refreshments and the naming of the Olmsted Falls Citizen of the Year.
