Majority favor vaccine mandates for certain workplaces, crowded events: poll | TheHill - The Hill

A majority of Americans say they favor vaccine requirements for participating in crowded events or airplane travel, in addition to mandates for certain professions.

poll conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and released Friday found that 56 percent of respondents said they were strongly or somewhat in favor of requiring Americans to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to attend crowded events such as movies or concerts, while 27 percent said they were strongly or somewhat opposed to it.

Just over half of people were in favor of those requirements for going to a restaurant or bar, while 57 percent were in favor of it when it came to airplane travel.

The highest percentage of respondents said that they were in favor of requiring health care and hospital workers them to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19: 62 percent, compared to 19 percent who opposed it.

The poll found that 58 percent of respondents were in favor of requiring people who interact with the public to be fully vaccinated. Over half of those polled were also in favor of requiring members of the military and government workers to be fully vaccinated — 56 percent and 55 percent, respectively.

The poll underscores the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic within the U.S. as the delta variant makes its way through unvaccinated communities. The United States has seen a surge of new COVID-19 cases, including more than 157,000 on Wednesday, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

New daily cases fell to under 10,000 in June.

Some cities, including New York and New Orleans, have started to impose proof of vaccination requirements as a way to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Multiple schools and cities have instead imposed mask mandates, sometimes at odds with Republican governors, who have mostly been vocally opposed to the requirements.

Some communities argue, however, that the measures are needed amid lagging vaccination rates and high amounts of new COVID-19 cases.

About 70 percent of Americans aged 12 years and older have been at least partially vaccinated, while roughly 60 percent are fully vaccinated, according to CDC data.

The AP-NORC Center poll was conducted between Aug. 12 and Aug. 16 with 1,729 adults interviewed. The margin error is plus or minus 3.2 percentage points with a 95 percent confidence level.
