LEE COUNTY, Fla. — Just a few weeks into the school year, local teachers are already facing crowded classrooms and a shortage of teachers and staff.

The Teachers’ Association of Lee County (TALC) said this school year has already been tougher than the “bleakest” days of the last school year.

“It seems like in some schools they’re having a real problem with controlling the COVID situation and in others, they’re not,” TALC president Kevin Daly said. “So we’re looking at the district to kind of step up and figure out what they need to do to make all the schools safe.”

“We recognize the stress a lot of these staffs are under,” district spokesman Rob Spicker said. “And that has us currently reviewing all of our COVID safety protocols, may be things that need to be changed that address some of these concerns that come up through this letter.”

The district is already short on teachers and substitutes this year. As more teachers call out for COVID-19 symptoms or quarantine some classrooms are combined, creating more potential for the virus to spread in classrooms.

The union also said there’s not enough transparency when students and staff test positive.

“What are the real numbers,” Daly asked. “How many staff members are out being quarantined? How many students at each particular site? And what’s the plan so everybody can hear it, including parents?”

Daly said some of last year’s protocols need to be used again to protect everyone in the schools, including social distancing and more frequent cleaning.

“That could be the return to every school having one-way hallways,” Spicker said. “It could be the return of students having lunch back in their classrooms and out of the cafeterias to keep them more in those cohorts, those groups.”
