Fairfield’s Tomato & Vine Festival all about fun - Vacaville Reporter

Lightheartedness and laughter were in full force Saturday at the Tomato & Vine Festival in Fairfield, both much needed as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on.

There was live music, food, games, carnival rides, vendors, a petting zoo and more.

Families and friends packed downtown Fairfield for a little outdoorsy fun and got to catch up with each other and mingle with others.

DD Turner, 11, was all about the rides.

Sitting on a slice of carpet, she flew down a massive slide and landed with a smile on her face and her hands in the air.

“It was pretty cool,” she said, “but it was really fast.”

Next up for the youth — the ever popular Ferris Wheel.

Nearby, kids squealed with glee as they navigated an obstacle course offered by the Fairfield Fire Department. Following their trek, they walked away with awesome firefighter swag.

Past the bounce house and Jeep-Go-round, children happily bounced atop ponies. Tightly grasping the reins, boys and girls smiled for their loved ones and petted the cute equines.

“I like it. It’s really good,” said Johnny Davis, who brought grandsons Zion, 10, and Adahia, 4, out for the day. “This is my first time.”

He only just moved to the city in June, and it was his day for “grandad duties.”

Across the way, food and drinks and vendors ruled the day  From roasted corn and potatoes to barbecue to nonalcoholic drinks in coconuts and pineapples, there was something for every palate.

And from cell service to sunglasses to jewelry and food dips, retail offerings were also in abundance.

“It’s nice, the music is nice, too,” said Jan Smith of Fairfield, who has come to nearly every festival since its inception.

There were at least three stages offering a mix of live music, and a dancer at one of them—definitely a boon for music lovers.

Erica Hughes enjoyed the outing, though she described it as smaller than that of past years.

“It’s nice to be able to come out and do something,” she emphasized.

The Tomato & Vine Festival continues Sunday, from noon-5 p.m. Admission is free.

Officials remind visitors that Texas Street will be closed between Taylor Street and Union Avenue through 8 p.m. Sunday. Motorists on Madison, Jackson, Webster and Jefferson streets will not be able to cross Texas Street.

Though street parking may be available, using county or city lots is advisable.
