After months of no bar life, hundreds of people crowded Austin's Sixth Street last Friday, the day Gov. Greg Abbott allowed bars to reopen at 25 percent occupancy.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the usually packed Sixth Street, known for its strip of bars, went quiet after government officials temporarily shut down its bars and restaurants to help slow the spread of COVID-19. On March 17, longtime resident Andrei Matei captured the "eerie" and "empty" street, saying he was "shocked" to see everything closed and boarded up.
