After a chaotic spring, the unofficial kick off to summer is here, and Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister has one message.

What You Need To Know

  • More boaters on water as holiday weekend picks up

  • Deputies will be watching for alcohol use, boating law observation

  • Visitors also expected to abide by social distancing guidelines

“A great day on the water has to be a safe day on the water,” said Chronister.

Sheriff Chronister says this weekend is going to be one of the busiest of the year, especially after spending the last few months in quarantine.

“People know that being outside during COVID-19 is the safest place to be, so why not take your loved ones out on a boat, and enjoy a great day on the water,” said Chronister.

So, on Saturday we loaded onto a couple of marked vessels to make sure the weekend is off to a safe start.

“So it’s morning and it’s already pretty crowded out here, come 4 or 5 o’clock, how big of a problem area is this?” asked Bay News 9 reporter Ashley Paul.

“It will be a lot more people, it will be triple what it is right now. But as long as everybody behaves, it’s not a problem area,” said Sgt. Ryan Balseiro with the Hillsborough County SHeriff’s office.

Deputies will be looking for a few things out on the water this weekend - including driving under the influence and  obeying boating laws.

Aside from making sure everybody is out here following the rules, the sheriff’s marine units will also periodically stop boats to do equipment checks and to make sure they’re following social distancing guidelines.

“If you see a boat that has more than 10 people, would you stop it for that reason alone?” Paul asked.

“We could, we could remind them of what the requirement is,” said Balseiro.

But if you look around, you’ll see so far most boaters are following the rules.

“I mean, there’s 40 or 50 feet between these boats, so if you have a Covid concern, folks are doing the right thing,” said Balseiro.

Staying safe so we can all look towards a bright summer ahead.
