IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) - Iowa college graduates are facing a crowded job market in many of their fields as the pandemic continues to push the unemployment rate through the roof.
"Employers are waiting on their hiring activity until they know more about what's going on," Angi McKie said, director of the Pomerantz Career Center at the University of Iowa.
Iowa Workforce Development reports the state's unemployment rate shot from 3.6% to 10.7% from March to April and that more than 187,000 Iowans have filed for unemployment since the outbreak started.
The career center at the U of I says some students nearing graduation have seen their internship offers pulled and others have been asked to work online or remotely.
"They know that they might need to be patient, that the job search might take a little bit longer and they may need to expand their search a little bit," McKie said.
McKie says the university usually has a job placement rate around 95%, six months after graduation. She says the vast majority of seniors were still able to find a job but many had their start dates pushed back.
"I was more scared what was going to happen in the months coming up. Was it going to keep getting pushed back? Or was I actually going to start in August?" Macie Weber said, a 2020 business school graduate who has a job lined up with a health care records company in Wisconsin. Her start date has been delayed one month so far, from July to August.
For any students unable to find a job; McKie says they've been suggesting volunteer work to still pad their resume during the pandemic.
"Continue to develop those skills. Be persistent and keep those connections going," McKie said.
The Pomerantz Career Center organized a virtual job fair in mid-April and has a collection of tips for job hunting during the pandemic on its website.
