Thornton Mayor Jan Kulmann, a Republican, announced Tuesday that she is running for Colorado’s newly created 8th Congressional District.

Kulman joins a crowded field, becoming the latest candidate to launch a campaign to represent Colorado’s newest and most politically competitive congressional district.

Kulman, in the announcement, describes herself as “an engineer and ‘trailblazer’ in the oil and gas industry, advocate for parental school choice, and local official who beat back a recall by left wing activists in Thornton in 2016.”

The lion’s share of the newly created district, sprung from Colorado’s population boom, takes in parts of Adams and Weld counties and covers heavily suburban areas along with farm and ranch land north of Denver.

“I’m an oil and gas engineer, a mayor, and a mom. Solving problems is what I do. But I also know, sometimes you’ve got to stand up and fight. America is so much better than what we have become. Now is the time to elect an outsider who gets results,” Kulmann said.

If elected, she promises to bring “tenacity” to Washington to fight the “far left,” while striving “to solve the problems facing hardworking Americans.” Kulmann said she’ll work to lower the costs of oil and gas energy and re-establish America’s energy independence.

The election will be held Nov. 8, 2022.
