During a typical year, many people look forward to the holiday season — and with what COVID-19 threw at us in 2020, most people are ready to get back to a more “normal” season for 2021.

The Jersey Shore might not be your first destination during the winter holidays, but many towns dotting the coastline have some special events worth checking out, despite the cold.

Here are some of the events — holiday-related or just something fun — happening this weekend along the Jersey Shore.

A Very Merry Pop Up in Asbury Park

Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 19, noon to 5 p.m. at Grand Arcade of Convention Hall, Asbury Park

Shop from 12 local vendors, which vary from day to day, as well as retail tenants Betty’s Icebox, Wanderlust, Carla Gizzi, Funhouse, Drift, Sanctum Handmade and Asbury Park Roastery.

Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar

Sundays through Dec. 19, noon to 5 p.m. at Asbury Hotel, 210 5th Ave, Asbury Park

The Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar, hosted by Asbury Park Bazaar and Asbury Hotel, features local and regional artists, vendors and shops selling their goods inside The Asbury’s indoor hall and outside in heated tents on the terrace. Also onsite are food, drinks, entertainment and craft workshops. Entertainment and vendors vary each Sunday.

“Oceana,” a group art exhibition inspired by the sea

Exhibit on view through Dec. 23. Gallery open Mondays noon to 5 p.m., Thursdays noon to 6 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays noon to 9 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m. at Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park

This exhibition features artists that have created works which celebrate “all things ocean.” This collection ranges from the plein air paintings created in the area by local artist Michael Longo to large-scaled paintings of coastal and natural objects from Renee Levin. Other exhibiting artists include Suzanne Anan, David Bray, Kirsten Cosgrove, Jack de Poortere, Jill Ricci, Scott Szegeski, and Adam Wallacavage, among others.

TennAveAC Holiday Market

Saturday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 18, noon to 4 p.m. at 133 South Tennessee Ave., Atlantic City

Take a stroll down the sidewalks at and around Tennessee Avenue Beer Hall and do a little shopping from local artists and vendors. Get there before the vendors open for brunch, served until noon, or grab some good eats after, with the lunch/dinner menu available at 11:30 a.m. Also nearby and participating in the event are Bar32 Chocolate, Cuzzie’s Pizzeria Kitchen, and Rhythm and Spirits.

Atlantic City Holiday Bazaar

Saturday, Dec. 4, and Sunday, Dec. 5, noon to 5 p.m. at Noyes Arts Garage at Stockton University, 2200 Fairmount Avenue, Atlantic City

Shop from a selection of local and regional artists, vendors and shops selling vintage, handmade, art, jewelry, home goods, and more. Find food and libations from Cape May Brewery and Rhythm and Spirits in the Arts Garage cafe, and listen to a live performance by piano player Denis Brousse. Take photos with Santa as well as family and friends in an immersive photo station decorated for the holidays.

Magic Queendom Drag Brunch

Sunday, Dec. 5, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Showboat Atlantic City, 801 Boardwalk, Atlantic City

These Drag Divas invite you to be their guest as they take a trip to the Magic Queendom as Mickey’s favorite princesses and villains. This “all-ages” Drag Queen brunch includes the show, your choice of entree and a complimentary mimosa or Bloody Mary. Tickets begin at $50.

Ebenezer, a Musical Christmas Carol

Local Artists Holiday Bazaar at NJ Audubon’s Nature Center

Saturday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Nature Center of Cape May, 1600 Delaware Ave, Cape May

An outdoor pop-up tent sale featuring the original, hand-crafted works of 15 local Cape May artists, as well as book readings by Cape May authors every hour. Featured artists include photographer Tina Giaimo, fiber artist Sara Duling, jewelry maker Hali MacLaren, and watercolorist John Safrit, among others. Free admission and parking.

West Cape May Christmas Parade

Saturday, Dec. 4, 5 p.m.

The parade begins at the West Cape May Volunteer Firehouse and marches South on Broadway, winds East on Perry, and onto Carpenter Lane in the City of Cape May. Rain date is Sunday, Dec. 5.

Crafts at Christmas 2021

Christmas Candlelight House Tours

Saturdays through Dec. 18, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Various properties in Cape May

Cape May’s Christmas Candlelight House Tours, presented by Cape May MAC, have been an annual tradition for nearly 50 years. The self-guided tour allows you to step inside decorated historic homes, inns, bed and breakfasts, churches and hotels. Each Saturday features different properties and advance purchase is recommended. Tickets begin at $30.

Trolley tour: All That Glitters! Victorians ring in a new century!

Daytime tours on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays through Dec. 22

Travel back to 1899 as preparations for a very important New Year’s Day celebration are made. Tickets from $15.

Santa’s Trolley Rides

Daytime tours on Dec. 4, 5, 18 and 19

Mrs. Claus tells stories and sings holiday songs on this trolley ride through town, and Santa himself makes an appearance at the gazebo on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. Tour begins and ends at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., with free parking available. Tickets from $15.

Holiday Lights Trolley Rides

Evening tours Sunday through Friday nights until Dec. 31, except Dec. 24 and 25

Listen to Christmas music as you take a tour through the historic streets of Cape May and take in the lights of the Victorian homes, inns, and bed and breakfasts decorated for the holidays. Trolley tours are open-air and blankets are recommended. Tour begins and ends at the trolley stop on Ocean Street. Tickets from $15.

Breakfast with Santa

2021 UGLY Christmas Sweater Show

This all-ages appropriate show — at old-fashioned ice cream shoppe — is designed to entertain the entire family. And when you order an ice cream sundae, the show is free! After orders are taken, the wait staff invites members of the audience to participate in fun spoofs. Once the sundaes are delivered, the short 15- to 20-minute cabaret show begins. Long Branch Holiday Bazaar 2021

Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 19, noon to 5 p.m. at The Whitechapel Projects, 2nd Avenue, Long Branch

This holiday market is inspired by the traditional “Weihnachtsmarkts” held in Germany, and will feature goods from local and regional artists, vendors, as well as music, holiday photo stations, craft workshops and holiday decor. Vendors vary each day, so there’s always something new to see during the duration of the event.

Whitechapel Projects (WCP) is an arts, food and cultural venue featuring a sustainable restaurant and bar inspired by local ingredients, products and community collaboration, a craft nano-brewery, an 8,000-square-foot outdoor beer garden, an enclosed outdoor courtyard, and a multi-purpose, 2,100-square-foot indoor space. The event is free, for all ages, rain or shine, and pet-friendly.

Elf the Musical

Fridays through Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m., Saturdays through Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and Sundays through Dec. 12 at 3 p.m. at Algonquin Arts Theatre, 60 Abe Voorhees Dr., Manasquan

Elf the Musical is based on the popular holiday movie, following Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity. Starring Eddie Itte as Buddy, JQ Hennessy as Jovie, Brendan Flanagan as Santa, Joe Minella as Walter and Elena Asfendis as Michael. Tickets from $25.

Train Show

Cape Shore Chorale Holiday Concert

Sunday, Dec. 5, 3 p.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 2998 Bay Ave., Ocean City

Cape Shore Chorale, under the direction of Scott J. Breiner, will present a concert and sing-along of holiday favorites. The nearly 50-member chorus will be accompanied by pianist Gae Finch and instrumentalist Andrew Ehrhardt. Light refreshments will be served after the concert. Free, but donations are welcomed.

Ocean Grove Holiday Festival and Christmas in Ocean Grove

Saturday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Main Avenue, Bishop Janes Tabernacle and Auditorium Square Park

Artisans, crafters and live music line Main Avenue from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. At 3 p.m., The World Milal Missionary Choir Concert performs at Bishop Janes Tabernacle, watch a Live Nativity at 5 p.m. in the Great Auditorium and at 6 p.m., there’s a tree lighting ceremony and carols in Auditorium Square Park. Santa arrives shortly thereafter at 6:15 p.m., and the day’s events come to a close with a Christmas Celebration Concert at the Bishop Janes Tabernacle.

The Light Show on the Lake features approximately 120 Christmas trees — made of more than 50,000 lights — “floating” on Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. As soon as it gets dark, an orchestrated show of lights and music is played out across the lake as the lights reflect off the water’s surface.

The Magic Talking Christmas Tree is an oversized Christmas tree brought in from Santa’s forest which awakens to talk with visitors about holiday wishes (for free!).

Take a nearly 7-minute train ride along the outskirts of Smithville for $3 per person, which runs weather-permitting throughout the month of December. Call 609-748-8999 to verify it’s operating.

S’mores on the Greene

Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting

For a small fee, purchase a s’mores packet and make some gooey treats around the fire pits on the Greene, or just gather to get warm and watch the fun.

Scrooge

A pop-up marketplace is being hosted at Five 0 Six Surf Boutique, with different local vendors on hand each day.

12 Days of Christmas

Now through Sunday, Dec. 12, noon to 8 p.m. at Tuckerton Seaport, 120 West Main St., Tuckerton

This holiday-themed event features a pop-up gift shop, the Soap Bus, Christmas wreaths, reindeer games, make-and-take crafts, holiday photo ops and displays, and an outdoor reindeer scavenger hunt. Also, Tuckerton Seaport is offering holiday-themed boat rides during the event. The 50-minute, open-air, scenic boat ride is led by a Seaport Captain, and offers information on the coastal culture of the Barnegat Bay and Pinelands. Boat tour plus lighthouse admission, $15 per person; lighthouse-only admission $5 (children 5 and younger are free).

2021 Ventnor City Twilight Holiday Parade

Saturday, Dec. 4, 5 p.m.

The parade will travel down Ventnor Avenue, starting at Troy Avenue and ending at Oakland Avenue. After-parade activities at Ventnor Pocket Park include pony rides, face painting, and Santa. Rain date is Sunday, Dec. 5, at 5 p.m.

Greater Wildwood Jaycees Downtown Wildwood Christmas in the Plaza

Saturday, Dec. 4, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Byrne Plaza, Downtown Wildwood

Free carnival rides for the young and young-at-heart, as well as vendors, live music by the John Walter Band, and story time with Mrs. Claus. For more information, call 609-729-5501.
