What a freaking mismatch that was.
Sure, it was the #7 team versus the #4 team, but it wasn’t remotely close. Ohio State was ranked 6th nationally passing coming into this game and Sparty was ranked 130 th a.k.a. DEAD LAST against the pass and it took essentially 20 minutes for C.J. Stroud to sling 300 yards on the Spartans. It was 35-0 and the second quarter still had ten minutes remaining!
Here’s how in control the Buckeyes were: Their first two scores of the second quarter were plays designed to get depth guys who have been toiling lower than they’d like on the depth chart. It wasn’t game planning it was actively recruiting your own guys to stay out of the portal! Remember:
21-0 Ohio State, the Buckeyes lined up with a single wideout on the weak side with an overload to the top. OSU’s play call was an iso to that receiver, who was not one of the Earth, Wind and Fire trio. It was Julian Fleming for his first career Ohio State TD! That’s called a coach trying to make sure his dude stays happy for next season when he will be much more needed than this year.
28-0 Ohio State, the Buckeyes made sure to feed Pork Chop/Meatball/Not in the Doghouse anymore Williams so that he ended up in the end zone. Chris Fowler rightfully said he would start at a lot of other places and he’s another guy super important to keep happy for next year, especially when TreyVeon Henderson is a true freshman.
Those two scores were self-recruiting pander TDs because Ryan Day knew that there was no chance that the Spartans were going to touch the Buckeyes yesterday, not when C.J. Stroud was dropping dimes to the best trio of receivers in the country. This was an absolute and complete mismatch.
In fact, this was the equivalent of the old NCAA football games playing at the JV level, where you jump out 42-0 in the first half and then sim the rest of the game. Good heavens, this team has come on. Lots of fun stuff to talk about with the Bucket of Bullets this week, let’s go!
