Happy weekend! Let’s have some fun as we bid farewell to January! Whether you want to get outside into nature, stay in for some virtual fun, or try out some at-home and offline activities, we’ve rounded up a bunch for you to choose from. Check ‘em out!

This Saturday from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM, Liberty State Park (200 Morris Pesin Drive, Jersey City) will host Winter Evergreen Trees as part of their January Nature Programs Series. Visit Liberty State Park for an evergreen investigation. Learn how to identify different types of evergreens and the valuable role these trees play in nature. This program is for children age 5 and up and an adult must be present. The program is outside, so dress for the weather. Preregistration is required.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum (353 East Hanover Avenue, Morris Township) continues to host their Family Photo Scavenger Hunt on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is the final weekend for the January theme “Who’s Out There?” Take a photo of every item and get a prize. Preregistration is required. Cost is $10 per family

On Saturday, Morris County Park Commission will host Maple Sugaring Demonstrations at Great Swamp Outdoor Education Center (247 Southern Boulevard, Chatham Township). Learn how to identify and tap maple trees, collect sap, and make syrup over a wood-fired evaporator. This year, the program will be held entirely outdoors. 1-hour sessions will begin at 1:00 PM and 2:30 PM. Cost is $5 per person age 3 and up. Children under 3 are free. Preregistration is required.

On Saturday at 10:00 AM, The Newark Museum of Art will host Virtual Creative Play: The Art of Puppetry. This program is recommended for children aged 3-5 and their caregivers. Storytelling crosses cultures and time. Throw in puppets and we’ve got a happening. Explore some classic works of art, along with a fun project. This program is free, but registration is required. You can find a list of needed materials and a registration link on the website.

Rutgers University Geology Museum will host their annual Open House virtually this Saturday. In addition to a mineral sale and lectures for adults, there will be activities for children throughout the day. Hour-long sessions will start at 9:30 AM, 10:30 AM, and 1:00 PM. Three activities are available: Big Impact!, Dinosaur Trivia, and Dinosaur Origami. More information and the registration link are available on the website.

Check out this adorable Love Bug Craft. The blog calls it a Valentine’s Day craft, but we think it’s suitable for any time of year. You’ll use a small paper cup, yarn, pipe cleaners, googly eyes, beads, and other decoration of your choosing to make these little creatures. Little children might need some help with the assembly, but older kids should have an easier time. No matter what age your kids are, they can enjoy selecting their yarn colors and creating faces on these. Make one or make a whole army of them!

This Robot Toilet Paper Roll craft is fairly simple and suitable for all ages with some modifications for the youngest children. First, you’ll color your toilet paper tube. This article suggests painting it, but you could also wrap it in paper or even foil. Then simply glue construction paper, beads, eyes, or whatever else you like to the tube to make it look like a robot. If your kids aren’t into robots, they could make monsters, people, or animals. Let them get creative!
