MANISTEE — Catholic Schools Week kicks off on Jan. 31 and Manistee Catholic Central has plenty in store to make it a memorable week for students.

Jenny Howes, MCC director of admissions and mission advancement, said the week is intended to remind students that their faith is something to be celebrated and enjoyed.

"Anything that's going to help them kind of marry faith and fun is always good. We really want to let the students know that their faith is something to be celebrated," she said. "God wants them to be happy and God loves them and they need to realize that through going above and beyond. That's why we have Catholic Schools Week."

Howes said students will have a new event to enjoy throughout the week.

"One of the new and exciting things we're doing this year is the Lego Challenge," she said. "That's something that students can make at home and then that will be brought into the school and displayed. There are different aspects of our faith that they can make Lego representations of."

Students will compete for daily prizes and have daily prompts upon which they will base their builds, including God's creation, spiritual family and the Resurrection.

Classes will also compete in the Change Challenge.

"Student Council is voting on what to use the proceeds for today (Tuesday)," Howes said. "It will be something around the school that needs improvement, and then the classes are going to compete to see who can bring in the most loose change. Each day it's going to be a different coin denomination. ... Then we'll figure out which class brought in the most change and it will go to benefit a need at the school."

On Monday, the sixth through 12th grade students will go to Crystal Mountain.

"They're going to have Mass outside and then they're going to go skiing and snowboarding, and lessons will be available," Howes said. "Of course, Mass is the element of faith out there, but so is just being out in God's creation, enjoying the winter in Michigan, being thankful for legs that carry you and being able to have a fun day with your friends."

Kindergarten through fifth grade students will bowl at Striketown on Monday.

"They're going to take turns going over to the bowling alley," Howes said. "Thankfully that's opened again, so we're able to give them some business after they've been closed for a while."

Tuesday's catechism bee will allow elementary students to put their knowledge to the test.

"It's kind of like a spelling bee, but it's all questions pertaining to the students' faith and the Bible," Howes said. "It starts with second and third grade, and they might be asked, 'What day was Jesus born?' or 'What was Jesus' mother's name?' And then it goes up to sixth grade and they'll have a little bit tougher questions."

The sixth-grade winner will go on to compete in the Diocesan Catechism Bee in Gaylord in the spring.

There will be a sweet, syrupy meal for students on Tuesday, as well.

"Every year the men's club at Divine Mercy Parish makes us a pancake breakfast," Howes said. "... It's really delicious. Anyone who has ever gotten a breakfast from the men's club at the Parish Center knows they do an awesome job. That's a fun treat from our parish to the school."

The Washington Group's spaghetti dinner fundraiser will be held on Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. Meals will be takeout only.

"The members of the Washington Group are selling tickets, so if someone wants a ticket, call the school (at (231) 723-2529) and we can get them in contact and get them tickets," Howes said.

MCC students will serve the community Wednesday.

"It's Christian Service Day and we're going to be working with the parish and we're going to have students make snowmen for the elderly, if there's enough snow," Howes said. "If not, they're going to make pinecone birdseed feeders and hang those around in yards for the elderly and homebound. Then they can watch the birds and look outside and see a happy snowman out there to just kind of brighten their day."

Students will also make valentines for the homebound as well as for prisoners at the Oaks Correctional Facility.

Thursday will feature an all-school Mass at the church, and students will make thank-you cards for their families, teachers and benefactors of the school.

On Friday, students will partake in one more fundraising venture before punctuating the school week with an afternoon sledding party at the football field.

"There's going to be a jean day. With that, the students bring in a couple dollars and it's going to the seminarian fund," Howes said. "That money is going to help benefit those in our diocese that are becoming priests. They won't have to wear their regular school uniform on that day; they can wear jeans."

Howes said the annual Hall of Fame dinner has been postponed, with plans of holding it in October.

"We're hoping to have the dinner in the fall and hoping restrictions will be eased up by then so we can do something safely," she said. "We want this year's nominees to get the same nice dinner and celebration that the nominees in the past have received."

Nominees will be decided at a later time.

The second annual MCC's Got Talent talent show was also postponed due to coronavirus restrictions.

"That was a really awesome way to celebrate all the talents that God has given these kids," Howes said. "You see them in school every day and then you never realize that they have this awesome singing voice or can play the violin. There were just so many awesome things that last year's talent show brought out in our students and I think it really gave them a lot of confidence."

Howes said students will have a busy and enjoyable week ahead of them, weather permitting.

"Hopefully there are no snow days. One year it was all canceled because of snow days," she said. "We jokingly say that's like God's way of giving the staff a day of Catholic Schools Week off — that's a staff appreciation day."
