Summer camp fun beats out noises, stresses of the city for kids - Long Beach Press Telegram

Parents and grandparents continue to call Long Beach youth agencies about how important summer camps have been in the lives of their children and grandkids.

“I just got another call the other day from a grandfather of two of our club kids,” said Don Rodriguez, executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Long Beach. “He said his grandson and granddaughter will really miss camp this year if they are not able to go because of the coronavirus.”

Rodriguez said the kids were so appreciative of getting away from the noises of a city, with sirens, helicopters and sometimes even gunfire, according to the grandfather.

“They learned how to climb ropes and loved that,” Rodriguez said. “They learned new skills and enjoyed just being outdoors. It would really help them to get away for a little while from being cooped up by the pandemic.”

Rodriguez and other youth agency officials remain optimistic that overnight camps for kids in the San Bernardino Mountains will be approved by state and county officials.
