Simpson emerges from crowded leaderboard to win RBC Heritage by 1 - theScore

Webb Simpson emerged from the pack with a final-round 64 to win the RBC Heritage by one shot over Abraham Ancer.

Simpson entered Sunday holding a share of the lead with three others. He fell off the pace with a slow opening nine that a weather delay of almost three hours interrupted.

However, the 34-year-old birdied five of his final seven holes at Harbour Town Golf Links to break away for his second win this season. He also took down the Waste Management Phoenix Open in February, and Simpson now joins Justin Thomas and Brendon Todd as the PGA Tour's only multi-tournament winners during the 2019-20 campaign.

"... The last kind of 10 holes were a blur because guys are making birdies, we're trying to finish before night comes, and so to finish with five birdies like that was really special, especially after going kind of yesterday and the first 10 holes, 11 holes not making putts," Simpson said after his win.

His 22-under par set the tournament record, and he notched his seventh career win and second victory on Father's Day. The other was the 2012 U.S. Open.

One of the players chasing Simpson was Ancer, who could have forced a playoff but failed to birdie the final hole. The 29-year-old jockeyed for position atop the leaderboard with Tyrrell Hatton for the majority of the round until Simpson passed them both.

Here's the final leaderboard:

Place Player To Par R4 Score
1 Webb Simpson -22 64
2 Abraham Ancer -21 65
T3 Daniel Berger -20 65
T3 Tyrrell Hatton -20 66
T5 Sergio Garcia -19 65
T5 Joaquin Niemann -19 65

The top of the leaderboard hardly tells the story of what unfolded Sunday at Harbour Town. Midway through the fourth round, there were 25 players at or within three shots of the lead, and nine different players held a piece of the lead at some point during the day.

Thomas held an early share of the clubhouse lead. After making the cut on the number, he shot 66-63 to finish at 17-under, tying for eighth.

Brooks Koepka showed signs of life for the first time since the 2019 Tour Championship, with the world's fourth-ranked golfer posting a 65 on Sunday. He temporarily held a piece of the lead and wound up in solo seventh.

The PGA Tour heads to Cromwell, CT. next week for the Travelers Championship, and nine of the world's top-10 players are set to compete.
