WASHINGTON D.C.: After the COVID-19 pandemic almost ended the tradition of visiting friends and family over the long holiday weekend, millions of Americans were again crowding into airports or traveling on roads this week and into the weekend for Thanksgiving.

The National Weather Service said that a storm that hit much of the eastern U.S. on November 21 was moving offshore the next day, easing concerns of significant flight delays the day after when millions of Americans gathered for the traditional turkey dinner and watched the NFL on television.

The National Weather Service said a "White Thanksgiving" was still possible for parts of New England, where some New Hampshire towns woke up on Wednesday to as much as six inches (15 cm) of snow.

Industry forecaster Airlines for America said that between November 17 and November 27, U.S. airlines carried a record high 29.9 million passengers, or nine percent more than a year earlier and up 1.7 million passengers from pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels.

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, on Tuesday, 2.6 million passengers were screened at airport security checkpoints, the highest ever for a Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and Wednesday was busier.

Mike Arnot, spokesperson for aviation analytics company Cirium, said that as of midday on Wednesday, major U.S. airlines had few flight cancellations.

Meanwhile, the American Automobile Association forecast 55.4 million people would have traveled 50 miles (80 km) or more away from home from Wednesday to Sunday, up 2.3 percent from last year, the third highest level since it began tracking holiday travel in 2000, but still lower than the number recorded in 2019 before the start of COVID-19 lockdowns.
