Rehoboth's visitors and residents are saying they would support a parking garage to be put into Delaware's busiest beach town.

That's one of the results of a parking and traffic survey conducted on Rehoboth's website from October 24-November 26, 2023.

A study conducted in 2022 showed that Rehoboth has 2,645 metered parking spaces, 4,196 permit parking spots, and another 315 on surface lots.

Trying to find one of those precious spots on a warm, sunny July Saturday can be a frustrating challenge, so the city conducted a survey looking for suggestions.

The 665 respondents were given five options for way to help the parking situation, and rate them from 1-5, with 1 being the top priority.

The results were:

  • Additional parking in downtown Rehoboth Beach (i.e., a parking garage) - 1.96
  • Enhanced shuttle/transit options from offsite parking - 2.46
  • Better signage/promotion of metered and permit parking areas - 3.33
  • Striping parking spaces in permit areas where spaces are not currently marked - 3.41
  • Expanding metered parking areas into existing permit areas beyond commercial core - 3.69

They were in lesser agreement when it came to what is causing the parking headaches.

  • Lack of turnover at existing spaces - 2.53
  • Insufficient alternatives to parking in the commercial core - 2.75
  • Delivery vehicles blocking parking spaces - 3.50
  • Inadequate information about available permit parking types, prices, locations - 3.59
  • Inadequate information about available metered parking locations - 3.65
  • Lack of enforcement of illegal/improper parking - 4.80

Lack of parking, overdevelopment, and lack of public transportation options were also highlighted by many of the respondents.

The city also asked what would it take for people to be more comfortable walking or biking in Rehoboth.

The top response for walking was that no improvements were needed, with some calling for wider sidewalks, but "nothing" was the top response for if people would bike.

39.7% of people said they would be willing to walk 3-4 blocks to get where they want to go in Rehoboth, followed by 27.9% having a limit of 5-6 blocks.

Rehoboth's City Commissioners are scheduled to receive a briefing on the study during a meeting on Monday, December 4.

Action items are slated to be worked upon throughout the Winter, with a finalized report due in Spring 2024.
