In AppleTV+’s The Crowded Room, which premiered June 9, Tom Holland plays “Danny Sullivan”, who is arrested after being involved in a shooting in New York City in 1979. The thriller is told through a series of interviews with investigator “Rya Goodwin” (Amanda Seyfried). Danny’s life story is revealed through the interviews, including the mysterious past that shaped him, as well as all the twists and turns that lead him to a life-changing revelation.

[**SPOILERS FOLLOW**] If you’ve been watching along, you’ve witnessed the reveal that Danny suffers from a severe mental illness.

In episode 107, which aired on July 7, it became clear that Danny suffers from Dissociative Identity Disorder, or Multiple Personality Disorder. In the same episode, it was also revealed that other characters in the series (Ariana Atkinson, Yitzhak Safdie, Jonny Wilson, Mike and Jack Lamb) were personalities, or alters, of Danny.

In order to play Danny effectively and true to the story, Holland had to go to a place he hadn’t been yet in his career.

“There [were] some dark places for sure,” the actor told me over Zoom. “Playing a character that is suffering from this condition for the reasons they are suffering it is a really, really difficult thing to wrap your head around. I can't say that I understood in anyway what he was going through, but I tried my best to and it was really tough, it was really, really difficult.”

It was the complexity of the character that drew the Spider-Man actor into the project.

“I'm always looking for a challenge, it's something I'm really strict on my agents about,” he said. “Unless it's going to push me, unless it's going to make me really, really have to work hard, then I'm not interested.”

The show also marks Holland’s second time serving as an executive producer, following 2022’s Uncharted. For the 27-year-old star, taking on the additional role helps him dive deeper into the project and into the character.

“I think it actually does help get more into the character,” the UK native stated. “Understanding the show as a whole, learning about every aspect of what's going on in the day, figuring out the schedule, working with the other actors, working with the writers, working with the department heads to make the show come to life just makes you feel so much more invested and to me, it was fuel to the fire.

“It really gave me that extra drive. I loved being an executive producer, I look forward to doing it again. It's something I'd love to do on all of my work, should people allow me. Hopefully I've got a good reputation in the business that I'm good at it so that they will let me, but we'll have to wait and see.”

Epsiode 9 of the 10-part series debuts on Friday on AppleTV+. The series was inspired by the 1981 non-fiction novel The Minds Of Billy Milligan by Daniel Keyes.

Emmy Rossum, Sasha Lane, Will Chase and Lior Raz —along with guest stars Jason Isaacs, Christopher Abbott, Thomas Sadoski and Zachary Golinger— are also included in the show’s cast.
