NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — A day like Thursday brought large crowds of people to the beach and for Southern New England, this is one of the first days of intense heat and sun so beachgoers are taking extra precautions when it comes to beating the heat.

Isabella Sousa, a supervisor at Narragansett Town Beach said, “The weather is finally looking up — it has been a lot busier so today is pretty busy.”

With the warmer temperatures arriving in the Ocean State, crowds couldn’t wait to get their toes in the sand and sun on their skin.

Sousa told ABC 6 News that 200 people had entered through her entry point to the beach before 11 a.m.

ABC 6 News also spoke with the waterfront director of the beach who explained the approach they take for keeping lifeguards healthy while on duty.

Mike Florio or “Flo,” the waterfront director at Narragansett Town Beach said, “The last few days have brought back the summer energy that we desperately needed. We are starting to heat up and we have coolers with ice for the lifeguards,” he said.

“They can constantly fill up their bottles to make sure their hydration stays up. We actually make announcements to patrons throughout the day because they are basically sitting on a frying pan,” Florio explained.

As Florio explained, hydration and proper protection from the sun are necessary when sitting on the beach all day.

“Be careful because you don’t want to roast yourself the first time you are coming out in this high heat. You may pay the consequences later and I don’t feel like it,” Carlos Silvestre, a beachgoer from Freetown.

Florio also told ABC6 News that heat exhaustion is very common in extreme conditions and suggested beach goers remain aware of factors including the ocean and the sun.

“The biggest thing with the crowds that come in — you know everyone is excited but you need to check with the lifeguards to know where the riptides are. There are points throughout the day when we know when the heat exhaustions are going to happen and we really want to make sure people are drinking water,” Florio concluded.
