ALLEGHENY COUNTY, Pa. — Parents in one local school district are expressing concerns after their kids described their crowded school bus.
“If there’s an accident or any sort, these kids, especially sitting in the middle, have no chance,” said Danielle Mahon.
Mahon has three children in the Fox Chapel Area School District. One of her daughters snapped a picture showing kids spilling into the aisle of her school bus. Mahon shared the picture on Facebook and parents sounded the alarm. One parent commented, saying her son told her he’s been sitting on the floor of his bus.
“It’s kids everywhere,” said Mahon. “It’s mayhem.”
Mahon says her kids’ bus recently combined with another bus driver’s route. She also says her kids have been getting to school and coming home late.
“The Fox Chapel Area School District continues to work collaboratively with ABC Transit, the district’s transportation provider, to address the ongoing bus driver shortage that is occurring both regionally and nationally,” said Fox Chapel Area School District Coordinator of Communications Bonnie Berzonski. “At times, bus runs have had to be combined. The district confirmed with ABC Transit that no buses have operated beyond the allowable capacity. Students are being reminded that they will not have individual seats on buses and may need to share seats, if necessary.”
“Our kids’ safety needs to be a number-one priority, and Fox Chapel needs to do better,” said Mahon.
In early September, state officials announced Pennsylvania needed between 2,000 and 3,000 more drivers.
ABC Transit says it’s currently experiencing challenges recruiting bus drivers for Fox Chapel, and it’s something they’re working on every single day for a number of districts.
“I’m sympathetic to the fact that they’re short-staffed,” said Mahon. “I really am, but our kids’ safety has to come first.”
