Crowded French petrol stations suffer from supply 'tensions' - EURACTIV

The TotalEnergies group’s petrol stations are suffering from fuel supply tensions, notably due to the drop in pump prices and strike movements in refineries.

For several days, a fuel shortage has been affecting many petrol stations and queues several hours long have been observed.

On Wednesday, government spokesman Olivier Véran said that “12% of stations are experiencing difficulties with at least one type of fuel.”

The government explained these shortages are partly due to measures to support purchasing power, namely the reduction in the price of fuel at the pump.

Indeed, the State has put in place a discount of 30 cents per litre since this summer, which will be reduced to 10 cents from November.

“We will have fuel this winter,” French Energy Minister Agnès Pannier-Runacher told RTL media on Thursday.

TotalEnergies is particularly exposed to the shortage because of an additional discount of 20 cents decided by the group, which is added to the state discount. In total, customers of a TotalEnergies station pay 50 cents less for each litre of fuel consumed.

Also, because of these competitive prices, the proportion of stations in a shortage situation is higher in the French border territories. In Hauts-de-France, for example, 30% of the stations are affected. In this region bordering Belgium, strategic stocks have been released to ensure resupply, the prefecture announced.

The supply of service stations is also aggravated by the social mobilisations underway in French refineries, where employees are or have been on strike to demand wage increases. These movements also affect the refineries of other companies, such as Esso-ExxonMobil.

In addition, the unions claim 100% strikers among the fuel dispatch services in some refineries, which would partly explain the shortage effect in so many stations.

While the government avoids the word “shortage” and prefers to evoke “tensions”, it recommended remote working to those that can, in a bid to reduce fuel consumption.

The French oil giant said to the France info website that it is in the process of “restocking the network,” and that it “has built up stocks and is carrying out regular imports.”
