New York Giants 53-man roster projection includes difficult cuts to crowded WR room - ESPN

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants open the 2022 NFL regular season at the Tennessee Titans on Sept. 11 at Nissan Stadium. It will be the first for coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen as they attempt to fix this team.

There will be many tough decisions to be made, especially at wide receiver, where they have a crowded but oft-injured room. Where Darius Slayton fits (if anywhere) if they're all healthy is something that must be monitored.

The Giants also added a lot to the offensive line mix this summer. Who sticks on the 53-man roster will depend on how the long, hard summer unfolds.

Here is a projection:

QUARTERBACK (3): Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, Davis Webb

Jones is the starter, Taylor is the backup and Webb is almost like having another coach in the room. Webb sticks because he's a guy whom Daboll and Schoen clearly value.

RUNNING BACK (4): Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Antonio Williams, Jashaun Corbin

It's a relatively thin group considering Barkley's injury history. Would not be the least bit surprised to see another veteran added at some point.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, Sterling Shepard, Wan'Dale Robinson, Richie James, C.J. Board

Slayton is the obvious name missing here. Call it a gut feeling considering he doesn't seem a favorite of the new regime. Perhaps he gets traded this summer.

TIGHT END (4): Daniel Bellinger, Ricky Seals-Jones, Jordan Akins, Austin Allen

Bellinger is a player to watch this summer. He could be the starter come Week 1. Allen lands the final spot because of his size and ability as a blocker.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal, Shane Lemieux, Mark Glowinski, Josh Ezeudu, Jon Feliciano, Ben Bredeson, Marcus McKethan, Matt Gono, Max Garcia

A mix between a handful of recent draft picks and offseason free-agent additions. The competition at guard/center will be fierce. Jamil Douglas just missed this list. He could easily earn his way onto the roster instead of Garcia or Bredeson.

DEFENSIVE LINE (4): Leonard Williams, Dexter Lawrence, D.J. Davidson, Justin Ellis

Williams and Lawrence are the centerpieces of this group. Davidson and Ellis are the anchors. Jihad Ward counts as a DL/LB. It gives them depth in coordinator Wink Martindale's defense. Also, watch out for undrafted Michigan free agent Christopher Hinton to make a push for a roster spot.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKER (5): Azeez Ojulari, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Elerson Smith, Quincy Roche, Jihad Ward

It's a much more talented group than in years past, and it finally drops Oshane Ximines out of the mix. The 2019 third-round pick hasn't worked out.

INSIDE LINEBACKER (5): Blake Martinez, Tae Crowder, Micah McFadden, Darrian Beavers, Carter Coughlin

Martinez is coming off a torn ACL, so there needs to be contingencies. Beavers and McFadden were added in the draft as options. Coughlin could be listed as an inside or outside 'backer with his versatility.

CORNERBACK (5): Adoree' Jackson, Aaron Robinson, Cordale Flott, Darnay Holmes, Rodarius Williams

This would be a young and inexperienced group. But a lot of draft capital has been invested in Robinson, Flott, Holmes and Williams. Time to see if they're any good.

SAFETY (4): Xavier McKinney, Julian Love, Dane Belton, Yusuf Corker

This is another position where a veteran on minimum salary makes sense this summer. McKinney is the only player on the roster with significant starting experience at safety, but Belton and Corker (both rookies) could surprise.

SPECIALISTS (3): Graham Gano (kicker), Jamie Gillan (punter), Casey Kreiter (long-snapper)

The Giants don't have any other options right now. It's Gillan's job unless he falters this summer.
