CLEVELAND, Ohio - North Canton attorney Madison Gesiotto Gilbert on Tuesday was projected by Associated Press to win a crowded GOP primary in Ohio’s reconfigured 13th congressional district, defeating six other Republicans who sought the chance to take on former Ohio House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes of Akron in November’s general election.

Sykes was unopposed in the Democratic primary.

The congressional district they want to represent includes all of Summit County, a sliver of Portage County and northern Stark County.

Dave’s redistricting app estimates its voters are 50.2% Democratic voters and 47% Republican, so the right candidate from either political party could win the seat. Gilbert had 28.3 percent of the vote when Associated Press declared her the winner

Among the other Republican candidates, anti-abortion activist Janet Folger Porter of Hinckley had 16.7 percent of the vote when the election was called; former congressional aide Shay Hawkins of Broadview Heights had 11.4 percent; attorney and accountant Greg Wheeler of Barberton had 23.7 percent; communications consultant Dante N. Sabatucci of Cuyahoga Falls had 8.4 percent; government consultant Santana F. King of North Royalton had 2.4 percent; and Stow construction project engineer Ryan Saylor had 9.2 percent.

Gilbert scored the most coveted endorsement among this year’s crop of Republican candidates, that of former President Donald Trump, who described her as “an America First patriot.” She also spoke at his April 23 rally in Delaware County for his endorsed slate of Ohio candidates.

“The freedoms and the opportunities that we know and love are being threatened by far left radical members of our society who want us to take steps backwards, that want us to take steps towards socialism, that want to divide us on race, gender, and political ideology,” Gilbert told the crowd at Trump’s rally. “And most importantly, they want to destroy what is good about our great nation.”

Gilbert’s campaign website describes her as “a Christian small business owner, attorney, and wife,” who grew up in Stark County, obtained undergraduate and law degrees from Ohio State University and was crowned Miss Ohio USA, representing Ohio at the Trump-owned Miss USA competition.

She served as a press secretary for his 2016 presidential inauguration, co-chaired Women for Trump during his re-election bid, published newspaper opinion pieces and acted as a television political commentator, her LinkedIn profile says. Her husband is former NFL offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert, who played for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

She was also the race’s top fundraiser. As of mid-April, she’d collected $615,572 and spent $201,843. Her campaign had $413,730 in the bank and $200,000 in loans on the books from the candidate herself.

Gilbert last year announced a congressional run in the Northwest Ohio district represented by Toledo Democrat Marcy Kaptur but switched to the local district with no incumbent when revised congressional maps were released in March.
