The Republican field in the new 24th district is getting crowded - North Country Public Radio

The new 24th congressional district stretches from Niagara Falls to Watertown and Fort Drum, splitting Jefferson County in the process.

Republican candidates are stepping forward for the newly created 24th congressional district in what's becoming a crowded field. The sprawling new district stretches from Watertown and part of Fort Drum in the North Country west along Lake Ontario, cuts south of Rochester and then north to Niagara Falls and Buffalo's northern suburbs. It's considered a safe Republican district.

Congressman Chris Jacobs, who currently represents Buffalo and western New York, is the closest to an incumbent and has already announced he's running in the 24th. Jacobs told WWNY-TV he would be "humbled" to represent Fort Drum for the first time.

But the new district brings together very different regions of the state for the first time, and with that, some unpredictability and opportunity for new faces.

Mario Fratto, an attorney from Geneva who operates a granite manufacturing firm, told the Finger Lakes Times he's running on a Donald Trump-like "America First" agenda.

“Our veterans and senior citizens here at home must be taken care of before a single dollar is sent overseas,” Fratto told the paper. “Our brave men and women who serve in our police and fire departments are disrespected and taken for granted. Our farmers and small businesses are the backbone of this district, and they’re being crushed by inflation and regulations. I talk to truck drivers every day who are struggling with gas prices. Our borders are wide open, and our leaders refuse to stand up to China. We need a representative who understands the problems caused by the Biden administration on a personal level and that’s why I’m running.”

Buffalo-area attorney Todd Aldinger told the Watertown Daily Times he's running for the 24th district as a Republican. He told the paper he's running against COVID-19-era mandates and has been fighting against them as a lawyer in court.

The Democratic majority in the state legislature and Governor Kathy Hochul passed the new districts last week. Critics accused them of heavy gerrymandering to benefit Democrats. Republicans have already filed lawsuits trying to prevent the districts from taking effect.

The new maps give Democrats an advantage in 22 of the state’s 26 congressional districts. Currently, Republicans hold eight of New York’s 27 seats in Congress.
