Jonathan Swain, a Hyde Park business owner and community leader who leads an educational nonprofit, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District on Tuesday, joining a crowded field seeking to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush.

“No one else has the diversity of experience that I do and no one else will work as hard as I will,” Swain said in his introductory launch video.

Swain becomes the 14th Democrat to announce for the seat that Rush intends to vacate at the close of his term in January after 30 years in Congress.

Swain’s campaign said he has already raised $200,000 for his bid in the newly drawn 1st District, which runs from Chicago’s South Side through the south and southwest suburbs and continues nearly to Kankakee.

Swain is president and CEO of LINK Unlimited Scholars, a nonprofit group that works to help Black youths to succeed in college. He owns his family’s Kimbark Beverage Shoppe and is a past president of the Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce. He also is a founder of the Hyde Park Brew Fest.

Swain previously was a member of the Chicago Board of Elections, chair of the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals and deputy commissioner in the city of Chicago’s Department of Planning and Development.

“As a lifelong Chicagoan and South Sider, I understand the life experiences and values of the 1st District. I grew up here, I lead a business here. I have served here and I am raising my children here. I hope to earn the opportunity to continue my life’s work of expanding opportunity and uplifting the community I call home as its congressman,” he said in a statement.

Swain joins a field that includes Chicago Ald. Pat Dowell, 3rd; state Sen. Jacqueline Collins; Jonathan Jackson, a son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Karin Norington-Reaves, the head of workforce development for Chicago and Cook County, who has received Rush’s endorsement.

The district is overwhelmingly Democratic, making the winner of the party’s June 28 primary the likely successor to Rush.
