There’s an implicit test that potential employees undergo when they come to the PostcardMania office for an interview.

Do they love what they see? Or do they wrinkle their nose? That reaction in part determines whether they’ll be a good fit for the marketing company, which handles every step of the process for small businesses marketing their services through a postcard or online. They design postcards and websites, print in house and mail them out.

“We want someone who walks into this place and thinks that it’s amazing,” said Angie Missonis, vice president of human resources. “Those are the kind of people we want to hire.”

“This place” is really PostcardMania’s campus, a 69,800-square-foot sprawling office space with a ping pong table, exercise equipment, an onsite cafe and locker room. Employees get free breakfast at least once a month and free yoga twice a week. Executives are affectionately referred to as “maniacs” on the company’s website.

Employees obviously love what they’re getting. Clearwater-based PostcardMania ranked 13th of 33 midsize companies in the Tampa Bay Times Top Workplaces 2021. The company, which has 284 employees in the Tampa Bay area, has placed on the list nine consecutive times.

According to feedback from employees, PostcardMania has a company culture of openness and flexibility, of hard work and fun.

“The culture is the best I’ve experienced,” one employee wrote. “The events, free food days and continual community outreach/volunteer opportunities make for a fun environment. ...We are welcome to walk into our CEO’s office to discuss issues and brainstorm.”

With its purple walls and creative feel, the office is a reflection of the company’s energy. There are more team bonding activities than anywhere else Missonis has worked. A monthly calendar offers regular activities for employees to enjoy, from races on the street to a pajama drive for foster kids.

In fact, in an early March interview, Missonis said almost conspiratorially, “it’s employee appreciation day.”

PostcardMania had its best month ever in February, she said, so the company plans to celebrate its employees with pizza, games and music in what they call the “common room.”

But it’s not just the laid-back atmosphere that keeps employees coming back to work with smiles on their faces. It’s the mission. The company’s website calls PostcardMania “committed to doing small business marketing better.”

Numerous employees mentioned the ability to work with and give back to small businesses in their day job as a plus of PostcardMania. During weekly team meetings, Missonis said, employees learn more about how they are helping small businesses through videos with clients. Sometimes small business owners will say how they sent out postcards and were able to triple their income in a month.

“We love hearing those kinds of stories,” Missonis said, “because it shows us that we really are helping them.”

In one video, Shannon Tucker, the owner of Scott’s Iconium Store in Iconium, Mo., discusses how postcards grew his business. He sent out marketing postcards offering 15 percent off your order and advertising the store’s pizza and “legendary” Peach Nehi float. Already, 150 cards were redeemed out of 6,000 mailed out.

Despite the fun employee activities and the company’s purpose, Missonis said that there’s one thing she absolutely loves more than everything else: the company’s management style. She calls it very “easygoing,” even though everyone is “extremely busy.”

Multiple employee comments talk about the company’s flexibility and lack of micro-managing. The work employees are doing is coming from them rather than being hoisted onto them, according to Missonis.

As one person writes: “As long as I get my stuff done well and timely, I’m allowed to be myself.”
