WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Educators at College Park Elementary have found a way to subtract the negative and multiply the fun in math through a daily exercise called “M and M in the Morning.”

Math and Manipulatives in the Morning is an effort to help kids visualize problems and make learning more fun.

Students use math tools like blocks and counting dots to find answers to open-ended questions. For example, some third graders were working to find multiplication equations that equal 36.

Though no candy is involved, the students seem to really enjoy the unique way to start their day.

“It helps me because I can remember how much I have and division, like what I should divide, so I don’t forget and it’s easier to do multiplication with it,” Third Grader Sawyer said.

“It helps me to learn and learn how to do my multiplication and have equal groups,” Third Grader Maiya said.

They’re also allowed to write on the desk with erasable markers, which makes it a little cooler according to some.

“It’s pretty fun. I’m not allowed to write on tables at home,” Sawyer said.

This program is school-wide, so it can be tailored to kindergarten lessons all the way up to fifth grade.

Math Coach and Interventionist Lauren Wujtewicz, or Ms. W as the students call her, says this style of teaching helps students better understand how to solve problems.

“Teaching these students conceptually with math tools and representations and drawing pictures and really understanding the math,” Wujtewicz said. “If we do it in that way where we’re showing connections to math concepts and really understanding the math, the EOG is a piece of cake.”

As a trauma-informed school, Ms. W says this is a great way for students to ease into the day and get ready to learn, especially if they are coming in from a less than ideal situation at home.

“This is a non-intimidating way to come in, have something that’s accessible for all levels of learners,” Wujtewicz said. “They can build and explore, and our ESL learners can really shine because they’re showing their understanding through the tools that they’re using and they don’t have to worry about the language.”

The program is adding to the reasons for kids to love school.

“Learning and learning math and meeting new friends,” Maiya said.

Principal Dr. Maria Madison says she hopes this program catches on at other schools, looking forward to seeing other teachers taking advantage of the unique way to start the day and spark a love for math in students.
