Bauman, a senior at Worthington High School, is a varsity performer in volleyball, basketball, softball and tennis. She added tennis this fall, thanks to the volleyball season being pushed back due to COVID-19.

She spent most of the season at doubles.

“And it was my first time playing tennis since the seventh grade, so the beginning was a little rocky hitting balls in the net. But the girls were really fun to be around, and the coaches were incredible welcoming me to the team,” she said.

Through the years, Bauman has been more familiar to Trojans fans in the other three sports, particularly in basketball and volleyball. She became a key member of the varsity programs while still an underclassman. Her quickness and athleticism has helped her to success as a guard on the hoops team, and she’s a valuable setter on the volleyball floor.

Don’t call her Stephanie, by the way. That’s her full name, but as she was growing up she was always called Stephie. She also answers to Steph, but Stephie, she explains, has been “the go-to for everybody.”

Sports is fun, and Bauman takes to heart something she was told years ago. “The best advice I’ve received over the years is probably just to keep smiling and having fun. Just knowing you’re having fun on the court, that makes it easier to want to win, and win for the team,” she said.

Imagine the fun she has on softball bus rides to and from games in the spring. She and her teammates sometimes make music videos while the bus is moving. Apparently, though, the team likes to keep them from being passed around.

The fun, talented senior is this week’s Drill subject. You can see the video online at www.dglobe.com. Here’s a sampling of the interview:

QUESTION: How happy were you when the volleyball season, after being pushed back to spring, was later returned to the fall?

ANSWER: “When volleyball got voted back, I was really excited. It was hard going back and forth between tennis and volleyball ‘cuz we had both practices and meets going on at the same time. But it was really fun to get back on the court with my volleyball teammates.”

QUESTION: Yes, volleyball is back, but with a lot of changes due to COVID-19. What’s the most difficult thing to deal with, considering all the new rules and protocols the team is having to put up with?

ANSWER: “The hardest thing getting used to all the protocols is definitely having our masks on all the time. In practice I’m constantly trying to pull them down, but it’s helpful watching your teammates pull them up to remind you to keep them on. In volleyball, it’s definitely different this year without having the student section cheering you on when you’re down. But having your mom and dad there is still fun, knowing they’re up there.”

QUESTION: What do you like to do when you’re not playing sports?

ANSWER: “When I’m not playing sports I like to spend time with my family and friends. I like helping my grandparents at church -- we attend the same church, so it’s fun helping them -- and lately I’ve been helping my dad farming. It’s something new and fun for me. This year I learned how to dig and drive grain cart.”
