Halloween spots get creative with spooky drive-in, zip line fun - Boston Herald

Like most things in 2020, Halloween is not going to be typical this year.

Whether your town is allowing Halloween or not, whether you’ve opted to keep things small or go big, this doesn’t have to be the year of missing out.

Let’s call it the year of opportunity. Because here in the Northeast, where foliage reigns and pumpkins grow just about everywhere, Halloween is embraced — pandemic or not.

While some classic spots have had to pivot what they offer this year (there’s not really a chance for a full-on indoor haunted house experience, for instance), that still spells good news for lovers of all that is ghoulish.

From spooky drive-ins to pumpkin-lit drive-throughs, there are plenty of ways to amp up your Halloween fun. Consider these this week.

Roger Williams Zoo Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular, Rhode Island: A longtime favorite that’s drawn guests from all over New England, the Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular is alive and well and still has spots for you this week.

The zoo pivoted from its usual walk-through setup to a drive-through setup that lets you cruise past thousands of uniquely carved pumpkins.

You’ll see them along the driving path, in trees, on rocks and more. Think countless jack-o’-lantern faces gazing at you from above, beside and below.

The bonus? The warmth of your car. The chance for your little one to doze off without having to head back. And of course, the spooky fun of gliding through the dark night with those faces glowing all around.

The ride through takes about an hour, and there’s music that coordinates with the pumpkin themes as you view them.

Another bonus: With the glowing pumpkins all around you, there’s not a bad seat in the car, which means less sibling bickering.

There are other to-be-kept-secret spooky surprises too.

You can visit any night through Nov. 1 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Tickets are sold for each half-hour, which is your arrival and start time. You can meander the park as long as you wish. You can learn more and make a reservation at rwpzoo.org.

OCT. 25, 2020 – Treetop Adventures in Canton offers spooky, ziplining fun on Halloween night. Photo treetopadventures.com

Treetop Adventures, Canton: Fright or flight? How about both? One great way to rev up this unusual Halloween is the Glow in the Parks event at Treetop Adventures in Canton.

Only available on Halloween night (there were prior dates that have passed), the event puts you up in the trees for adventure, thrills and exercise (as they always do), but with a distinctly spooky theme.

There are 10 trails to choose from, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, with obstacles like rolling logs, bridges, ladders, tightropes, zip lines and more. Children 7 and older can take on the courses.

This time, you’ll find costumed characters both kind and creepy, glow lights, Halloween decor and more as you fly along a zip line, climb a tree-top ropes course and challenge yourself. Kids love it.

And here’s a bonus: Come in your Halloween costume and you’ll be gifted a 50% off pass for your next visit. You can learn more and make a reservation at treetopcanton.com.

Screams and Screens at Barrett’s Haunted Mansion, Abington: Barrett’s Haunted Mansion has been synonymous with Halloween for, well it feels like forever. Annual trips to get creeped out as well as re-creeped out by their popular returning characters are almost a rule in the Bay State.

Of course, they could not open that this year.

But talk about a pivot: This year they offer “Screens and Screams,” an actual drive-in movie with spooky, haunted extras.

Tickets are still available for Friday and Saturday, so pack the car with the kids and or the friends and head there for a double feature. Halloween night is a family-friendly night featuring a single movie, “The Addams Family,” that’s fun enough but not too scary for smaller kids.

As you watch, be ready — because the spooky characters usually in the mansion are wandering the grounds and will pop up and scare you at any time.

K-1, the Clown on the Stilts, Mischief, Doris and many others who have become famous from the years of the haunted mansion will be around to spook you.

A cool aside? When the pandemic struck, Barrett’s was challenged like many businesses. Because of that, their employees are all volunteering to run the drive-in movie events, a true show of company togetherness in a hard time.

Live family-friendly drive-in musical theater, Spencer-Pierce-Little Farm, Newbury: A perfect Halloween for the little ones can be found here. “Spookley the Square Pumpkin: The Musical” will be performed afternoons and evenings, Saturday and Nov. 1. This live, drive-in style musical theater experience broadcasts straight to audience members’ car radios, and tells the adorable story of a little square pumpkin living in a round pumpkin patch. How will that pumpkin show the round ones he’s just like them? It all comes out in the show.

It’s all set up and performed by the Firehouse Center for the Arts. You can learn more at firehouse.org.
