Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox called for stricter enforcement of COVID-19 restrictions this afternoon after photos, videos, and reports surfaced of overcrowded bars downtown on Friday night.

On Twitter this afternoon, Maddox said there would be a heavier presence and more tickets written for violating COVID-19 restrictions.

“Please help us to keep moving forward & not backwards in the fight against COVID-19,” the mayor said.

A video and photos on the Facebook page of the band The Velcro Pygmies show people packed closely together and cheering the band at a downtown Tuscaloosa bar called Rhythm & Brews. No masks are seen being worn properly.

Maddox said that was one of the bars he was referring to in his tweet.

In August, Maddox shut down Tuscaloosa bars for two weeks to slow an increase in the spread of the virus on the University of Alabama campus. He announced that decision after discussions with UA officials.
