BALLSTON SPA — llms Family Farm will play host to creatures both mythical and prehistoric this fall.

Dinosaurs will join with dragons on the farm’s first Pumpkin Glow & Light Show Drive-Thru, which starts Oct. 1.

“Garth [Ellms] has been wanting to do an event like this on the farm. … This year it made sense, with everything going on with COVID, to do another drive-thru experience,” said Kimmy Jaski, the farm’s communications director.

During the spring, Ellms hosted a donut drive-thru experience, as well as a scavenger hunt, both of which were popular, according to Jaski. It made sense to carry the drive-thru format into fall.

Using hundreds of pumpkins, artists from around the country designed intricate jack-o-lantern displays that will be lit up at night on a path throughthe farm. Some of the installations are 30 feet wide and 20 feet tall.

“There’s an amazing dragon and a whole jack-o-lantern graveyard setup. There’s skulls, motorcycles, a pirate ship. There’s a lot of cool designs, and more to be unveiled as well,” Jaski said.

The path is about a mile and a quarter long and snakes through the Ellms Family Farm property.

“The great thing about the farm is that it’s an awesome venue to do anything. It’s almost like a blank canvas so … artists and event creators are excited to come in, because looking at the farm it’s such a cool space for something like this,” Jaski said.

The farm opened to the public in late September and has been busy since, then extending its hours to Thursdays and Fridays. Visitors are asked to wear face masks and there is hand sanitizer available. Because of the way the farm is laid out, it’s relatively easy for people to remain socially distanced.

“It’s spaced-out Halloween family fun. You can be in the corn maze. You can be out in the pumpkin patch picking your own. You can walk through our pumpkin barn and pick up pumpkins that have already been picked. It’s been a positive response so far this year,” Jaski said.

The Pumpkin Glow kicks off tonight and runs through Nov. 7. Ticketed time slots are between 7 and 10 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays. People can purchase tickets online, as well as seasonal foods such as apple cider, kettle corn, cider donuts, etc., which will be served to ticket-buyers just before they enter the Pumpkin Glow.

The Pumpkin Glow will take roughly 25 to 30 minutes to drive through, and according to Jaski is meant for kids of all ages.

“It’s not super spooky. It’s more just magical and mesmerizing to see it all,” Jaski said.

“It’s something different and exciting and, during these different times, it’s nice to still be able to enjoy a Halloween season and the fall season. It’s an added bonus that you’re able to do it from the safety and comfort of your own car. We really are ensuring that everyone is safe.”

Tickets start at $29.99 per car. Ellms Family Farm is located at 448 Charlton Road in Ballston Spa. For information, visit ellmsfarms.com.
