Low, hopes to become the first LGBTQ House member elected from the Bay Area. Ten openly LGBTQ members serve in the House, after former New York Rep. George Santos was expelled last week.

“I’m running for Congress at an inflection point for Silicon Valley and the nation,” Low said in a statement. “Our region needs a representative that will lead on maintaining our global competitiveness, combat hate and stand up for the vulnerable, protect reproductive freedom, prioritize reducing crime in our communities and ensure that the middle class can once again afford to buy a house and raise a family where they work.”

He was endorsed Tuesday by fellow Democratic Reps. Ro Khanna, of Santa Clara, as well as by Reps. Judy Chu, of Monterey Park (Los Angeles County) and Mark Takano, of Riverside.

Low, D-Sunnyvale, who has served nearly a decade in the Legislature after representing the city of Campbell on its City Council for eight years, joins a field that includes San Mateo County supervisor and former state legislator Joe Simitian and former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo. Others who have filed include Democrat Rishi Kumar, who won 42% of the vote against Eshoo in the 2022 general election and Stanford University graduate student and investor Joby Bernstein.

Low, 40, will likely stress his youth in a year where age will be a prominent topic of conversation, given that the presidential frontrunners are President Joe Biden, 81, and Donald Trump, 77.

Low can’t transfer the $2.4 million in his Assembly fundraising account to his congressional race, according to federal law. Low traditionally has been a strong fundraiser, but his challenge will be to quickly raise funds before voters start casting ballots in early February for the March 5 primary. He is not permitted to run for reelection to the Assembly now that he is running for Congress.

Simitian, who has been raising funds for the office for several years, has $681,003 cash on hand. Kumar, with $20,921 on hand, is the only other candidate to report funds, according to federal campaign finance reports.
