Businessman Perry Johnson enters crowded Republican primary for governor - Crain's Detroit Business

Businessman Perry Johnson, a self-proclaimed "guru" of quality improvement in business management practices, is jumping into the crowded Republican primary for governor in a bid to face Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at the ballot box this fall.

Johnson, the founder of Troy-based Perry Johnson Registrars Inc., is known in the automotive industry for his statistical-based approach to improving quality in manufacturing plants and corner offices alike.

He is the author of several books on ISO 9000, a set of standards for quality management in businesses and large organizations.

Johnson, 74, of Bloomfield Hills, has been talking privately to fellow Republicans for months about joining the GOP governor's race, which includes businessman Kevin Rinke, retired Detroit police chief James Craig, conservative commentator Tudor Dixon, Kalamazoo chiropractor Garrett Soldano and seven other lesser-known candidates

Rinke, who amassed a fortune in car dealerships and traumatic brain injury care, has committed $10 million of his own money toward winning the Republican nomination in August.

It's unclear how much money Johnson will pour into his own campaign.

In a statement Thursday, Johnson said he would "raise and spend the necessary resources to begin the process of running for governor."

Johnson criticized the State of the State speech Whitmer delivered Wednesday night at Detroit Diesel's Redford Township manufacturing plant.

"Governor Whitmer's State of the State completely ignored the horrendous quality that taxpayers receive for their money from state government," Johnson said.

Johnson said a lack of "commitment to quality with proper statistical methods and transparency" in Whitmer's administration "might well have prevented the $8.6 billion unemployment fraud, nursing home death scandal, Benton Harbor water crisis, kept schools open, and helped small businesses survive the pandemic."

"Implementation of statistical methods with a commitment to quality saved the automotive industry and American manufacturing and can save Michigan government today," he said.

Rodericka Applewhaite, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Democratic Party, said Johnson's decision to join the gubernatorial race is more signs of trouble for the GOP.

"Perry Johnson's entry into the Republican gubernatorial race brings the clown car count back up to 12 and doubles the amount of out-of-touch millionaires trying to buy their way through this crowded and messy primary,"

Johnson's press release was distributed Thursday by Republican strategist John Yob, who quit Craig's campaign in November.

Yob, owner of the Grand Rapids-based political consulting firm Strategic National, confirmed Thursday he's working on Johnson's campaign now.

Johnson's press release included a statement from House Speaker Jason Wentworth, R-Clare, praising Johnson's management expertise, though not endorsing his candidacy for governor.

"I am neutral in the primary, but if you searched the country for the best expert to hire to make dramatic improvement in quality in state government, the perfect person you would come up with is Perry Johnson," Wentworth said.
